Hi, I'm a bit of a novice to this so please be forgiving.
ok...I have a tascam 644 which has MIDI in & Out and it also has a serial i/f ??? can i connect any of these to my PC to trigger the record in cubase Sx from when i press play on the 644???. I want to record each of my four tracks into Cubase in time, i can only record 2 tracks (L&R) tracks at once. I want to record drums from the 644 to Cubase and have all the bits in time. What would i need to change in Cubase SX ??? email leefunkadelic@hotmail.com if you have the answer!

Many thanks

I'm not a Cubase user, but I've been successfully synching my 644 for some small projects to my MR8, some cheap Midi keys, and my MMT, so I can respond based soley on my experiences...
I have yet to find a way to have the 644 respond to a Master Midi device without having to use a stripe track on the deck itself.
What this means is: You are only going to have three tracks to work with because your 4th track is used as the 'synch track' when synching up through Midi. Someone else with more 644 savvy might have a workaround (and if so, I would love to hear it... Ghost?).
Also, the serial connection point you're seeing is only for connecting another 644 (or 688) to your unit... I'm pretty sure it won't communicate with your 'puter like you want it to.

I assume you are saying that the soundcard providing the input to Cubase/your computer has only 2 inputs and that's why you can't take advantage of the direct outs on the 644.

Here's what I would do: set up the first two tracks into Cubase and record them. Now go back, mute the tracks you just recorded and record the other two. Now go back and use the zoom-in view to line the tracks up. We used to call this process taking tracks 'wild', meaning without reference to timecode when I worked in a jingle studio.

And no, that port will NOT be able to start and stop your computer. Midi clock will though --- just make sure the computer is in external clock mode and the 644 is transmitting midi clock.

Thanks but still need help

Yeah My Cubase input is just the stereo input on the soundcard left & Right. How to i run Cubase SX to an external clock???

I tried recording two tracks at a time from the 644 but it was near impossible to match up a Bass drum, Snare, Hi hat & Overhead all in time. any suggestions??? i guess if i got the drummer to a 4 click at the start that may help. However alot of our Funk tunes start with Bass or Guitar or Vox.

So to trigger Cubase then i'll need to record a Midi track onto one channel right???? and then set that to communicate with Cubase SX clock??? How to i set Cubase????

Thanks for your help people, it's nice to know there is help out there!

I'm using an M-Audio 2496 Audiophile Soundcard if that helps.

For the procedure to set Cubase to recieve external clock, refer to your Cubase manual.

It IS possible to match up the two tracks in Cubase - Cubase has a resolution of 480 ppq (pulses per quarter note) so if you take the quantize off completely and zoom in far enough it souldn't take more than a few minutes.

You've lost me with your third question. You need to transfer existing songs from the 644 to the computer and Cubase, right? If you have the recorder with the cassette w/the appropriate song and an initialized, blank song in Cubase no more setting should be necessary...
