Addled but happy
I just priced a Tascam 488 MKII at MusiciansFriend.com for 499.99! Is this possible? It lists for 729 at AmericanMusical!

I am very much leaning toward analog (reading about all the problems/extra equipment with PC stuff has made my mind turn to mush!)

All I want is 8 tracks for now. I'll worry about burning CDs and/or dealing with digital later.

Is this deal too good to be true?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Hey, I had two 488's. A nice machine but it is about obsolete.

You can get a DIGITAL box for a few dollars more and have the capability to burn digital to digital CD's.

Oh, you can do some nice stuff on the 488; but, man, you have to wait forever for the tape to rewind. With digital, it's wham, bam, thank you ham...back to start.

I use a Yam MD8 at the moment and it's all right. However, I am looking to go to the 24 bit sound that Roland has, plus a few other boxes. Why 24 bit? It SOUNDS SO GOOD.

One of the reasons why 488's are so cheap is that they are in the dead zone of recording.

Also, I just think Tascam quality has gone downhill in the past 5 years. I bought one Tascam Dual deck tape deck and everytime I pushed a button, I got the sound recorded on the track. Ugly. That happened to me once with a car I had. I'd play the tape and the engine noise would induct to the tape -- very ugly -- I sold the car.

My opinion -- go digital, at least 8 tracks.

Many boxes to choose from; make sure you know what you're getting before you buy.
