Hi I want to use a condenser mic (Shure 98A) for recording
but the Tascam 428 does not have phantom power.
What is the best and cheapest way around this.

WOuld a DBX Pro Vocal Digital Mic Pre-Amp with phantom
power do the trick or is there a simpler and cheaper
alternative.

I also have a tascam 488 tape 8 track that has phantom power.
Is it possible to use the phantom power of the 488 and link it up to the 428???

Pretty much any preamp with phantom will do - There are also "Phantom Power" boxes out there that do nothing but supply phantom.

However, if you don't mind dropping a few bucks on a preamp, almost anything out there will likely give you as good or better performance than the Tascam's stock preamps.

I have the us-428, and I use a 2-channel phantom power supply from carvin (the san diego show room is only like 30 mins from me, so it's easier than any online alternative)

I think it was like 30 bucks or so...

edit: but yeah, an external preamp would still give you better sound. I plan on upgrading to something like an Aardvark q10 in the near future, but the 428 has served me well for 3 or 4 years now..... I'm at the point though where I need more inputs, and better quality conversion and pre's (Eventually I'll add some nice outboard pre's to my system, but the ones on the aardvark will get me by until I upgrade and expand some other areas of my studio setup.)

i use the FMR RNP mic-pre which has phantom power.

i had mostly been using the 428 as a physical mixer for my virtual tracks. but since my gear is in an unfinished basement at the moment, i've been using the US428 and my laptop to record vocals in the spare bedroom upstairs.
