what would be the best order and configuration recording my five piece rock band (vox, 2 guit., drums, bass). We want to record at least one guit., bass, and drums live and then overdub the others. What would be the best order and configurations. Thanks a lot.

What order to record in?: Drums, guitar 1, guitar 2, bass, vocal, guitar solo.

Panning?: Drums, bass, vocal, guitar solo in the centre, 1 guitar panned right, the other guitar panned left.

That's one way of doing it and I hope that's what you meant.

If you don't mind having the whole rhythm section on 2 tracks (less control in the mix later) then I would suggest using the bussing function to record up to 6 mics to the first 2 tracks. You could use up to 4 mics for drums, one for guitar, one for bass.

You would first turn the tape input section for tracks one and two to buss L (1) and Buss R (2). Then, for each channel with a mic connected you would set levels and pan it according to what track you want the sound to end up on (left for track 1, right for track 2, center for equal on both).

You could do these in any configuration...all drums left and guitars right (would let you adjust drum vs. bass / guitar levels later), all mixed stereo, etc..

If you do it this way you now have 2 tracks left over for dubbing. You can do single overdubs to tracks 3 and 4 in direct mode, or mix multiple instruments once more by bussing L and R 3 and 4. Remember to disarm tracks 1 and 2 before you overdub or the new stuff will end up on tracks one and two also.

This scenario avoids bouncing and can provide excellent results provided you get the rhythm tracks right the first time, and you are skilled enough to play the whole rhythm part for the whole song in one go.

How do you do these with the Tascam 414 mkii (sorry, I just got the thing and I am not very experienced)
