OK, after much tinkering I now have my TASCAM 388 functioning to an almost passable standard however, I trust my ears and this particular unit as it currently stands doesn't have anywhere near as good fidelity as the first one I owned. I'm really hoping it's just a case of it needing a full, professional service, calibration & bias test to get it back running on 4 cylinders again.
This hopefully being the case I was wondering if anyone on here could recommend a decent tech who has all the tools for the job and knows what they're doing with them (ideally someone who has a track history of getting the very best fidelity from the Tascam 388 model). I'm based in Scotland, UK and, a 388 weighing what it does, I would ideally be looking for someone who can either come to me or someone who isn't too far away so I can transport the unit in person (both ways) to & from their workshop. Going from previous mishaps I wouldn't entrust this to our not so glorious national courier service 'ParcelFarce' (or any of them for that matter!)
I've made a few tentative enquiries to date but so far nothing back from any one. As you can no doubt tell from my previous posts on here, I'm now just very keen to get going with this unit but ideally I require it to be running at its optimum performance levels in order to do so as I've already lost a lot of faith in this particular unit (including my ability to maintain it! For example, completely removing the heads from the headblock plate wasn't one of my better ideas let's say!)
I have given this my best shot & tried hard to get this sorted with my limited technical abilities but I'm now of the opinion and have got to the stage where I accept I need to call in a professional in order to move forward here! Any recommendations directing me to someone with a track record for providing a professional service on this studio model would be very much appreciated!
I must admit, I'm starting to lose patience as, after a LONG lay off, it is my new year resolution to just dive back into music making so I desperately want/need to get back up'n'running this end ASAP. Instead of just throwing it back up on eBay for half the price of what I paid for it (like I'm known for doing with gear that doesn't 'just work' how I want/expect it to straight out of the box!) I feel I owe it to both the unit & myself to really give this one a fighting chance as I know from experience what can be achieved with these old Tascam 388 models (when they're performing properly that is!)
