Tascam 388 Help!

My friend just picked one up on ebay, and everything was working great on it. We woke up and went downstairs to listen to a demo he did, and we found the tape fully rewound. He didn't leave it like this. Now when he hits play, the counter runs backwards into the negatives. When loads the tape, and plays it everything plays ok, but when he hits RTZ, the tape runs forward, and the counter doesnt increase. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

To much dope! It sounds like you have the machine threaded wrong. plus
Tascam 388,s dont just rewind on their own.
Could someone of messed with it while you two where asleep? Or spilled somthing on or in it while it was unatended?
I would start buy making sure the tape is on correctly and try not using the load function first and see what happens. Good luck

But very GOOD dope apparently.
The counter runs backwards if the tape is threaded under it instead of OVER it.
As far as the rewind thing, uh......mmmmmm I forget.......
