I am just in the process of buying a load of used equipment, amongst which is a pair of Tascam 34's (quarter inch 4 track machines). Two questions:
Is it possible to link these together in sync to give 8 tracks? (I seem to remember some device being available years ago which could do this...a kind of remote unit which hooked up to two machines).
Secondly...anything specific to look out for with these machines? Any peculiar or typical faults?

It might be possible to link them up to get 6-tracks... but that seems like a pretty complicated thing to do. Its probably easier to record 4-tracks and then mix them onto the other 4-track (in stereo) and the record two more tracks on that machine. That way you'll get 6 tracks too.

I don't know if there is anything special to look out for with these models, but there are general things to look for in reel-to-reel recorders.
Check that all channels work, and that the heads aren't very worn. Replacing them is pretty expensive. It is a goodthing if you get reference tapes with them, because they are like $100 or so, and you'll need them if you are gonna trim any levels.

What are you paying for them, or are they just included in a bucnh of gear which youare gonna buy anyway?
