FALKEN

*************************
ok, before I open this sucka up I thought maybe someone else has had this problem. What is happening is that the right reel is not pulling like it should. the tape is not staying taut. there is not even enough pull to keep the tension arm up. so if you hit stop, the tape unravels a little bit. to get it to play I have to hold the reel up; then it plays fine. but if I hit stop it is not going to stop. well, the left side stops. the right side just sort of acts dead.....works in play, rw, ff...just does not keep the slack tight in idle. thanks.

Sounds like the spring on the right tape tension roller is broke or out of adjustment.
Have you ever taken the front off?

yeah but now I can't remember how I did it...searching old threads at the moment.

Yes, hello!

It might be the brake solenoid is all gooed up, so that it's not actuating in/out properly,... & maybe stuck in the "in" position, in which case it wouldn't apply the brakes properly when "Stop" is pressed.

Either that, or the brake-band itself is broken on the right.

I'm afraid you'll have to get under the front cover to know for sure.;)

okay; im all up in there...

everything seems ok....

is this the piston looking thing? it does look gooey. when this is pushed in; should it instantly "pop" back out? it is sort of slowly sliding out.
not sure what the brake band is exactly?

should I just get all of the gunk out of that piston thing? why is it there? ...help?

Yes!

The solenoid is that piston-thingy. There's two of them. If they're gooey, their position should be marked,... then they should be removed, disassembled, cleaned and refitted back into the original position.

On the brake assembly, there's a solenoid that pushes/pulls a lever, which then pulls 2 metal bands loose or tight around the reel tables, themselves. That's the brakes in a reel to reel. Let's assume for the sake of this discussion that both brake bands are intact and around their respective hubs. If they are not, they should be located and/or fixed.

;)

Thanks, Dave. since I need to get a mix out for mastering tomorrow, I attempted a "quick-fix" of both solenoids and just cleaned the outside. they seemed to pop back into place now, everything looking fine. I just finished putting the machine back together and crap. the problem is persistent. now it has also spread to the left side. when you hit stop the reels just keep going a little longer..... the "brakes" seem fine....... I don't know what to do at this point. I also "lost" a couple of the lights.....but thats sort of a moot point right about now.

It still seems like maybe the solenoids aren't moving freely.

...........................;)

after I'm done with these solenoids, do they need to be lubed?

It probably wouldn't hurt!!

.....................;)

If you lost a couple lights as well as possibly the braking,...

check all the connectors & maybe the fuses, if u get a chance.

the lights were "lost" when I put the face back on...I think I got them back. I will try some WD 40 on the solenoids I guess?? its all I have..they're clean now...

...and we're back on

thanks again, dave.

that was crazy.

the capstan stopped moving. I need to get this tape out to fedex in less than four hours and the machine died again. I am going to kill myself. and then I am going to destroy this machine.

aah!!

i got it on the bench and lo and behold the capstan starts moving again. load up tape and it's dead again. take the tape off and its still dead....?????????

interesting....the capstan just needs a little push start to get going......what's going on here?????

I took off the entire head assembly. I am just playing with the lifter's laser eye and the motor. its like....once you give it a little push it goes...you can let it even get to almost stopped and then push the lifter up and it goes again...just so long as it doesn't stop completely....I tried some motor oil and no luck. I am thinking this is an electrical problem but I have no idea still. i am so farked.

ok I am 99% sure that this sensor is failed. I have tried cleaning it and nothing. I feel like crap.

aiy.

I pulled that sensor out. seems to be fine. I don't get it. there is a cap next to where the sensor plugs into the main board. what are the chances that this cap went bad and this is the cause?
