hi, i have a number of old tapes lying around, one of them is a status quo album and i have recently listened to it, and frankly i rekon its a good album. i was wondering is there any possible way i can put this tape onto cd, without it sounding like a heap of trash. i have a 4X Sony CRX-100E Cd-Recroder with nero burning rom software. is there any way i can reduce the hiss and cut up the tracks by using this software, also to record through my Yamaha DS-XG Legacy soundcards line in i only have a sony walkman. could someone please advise me of how to get the best results?? thanx a bunch...

Status Quo, those are old tapes!

I can't remember what the noise is like on the yamaha XG series, but it should be ok for the job. A better soundcard of course would be ideal, in an ideal world.

Nero will do fine for the burning, but you will need something to record to, from the cassette(I assume cassette).

Goldwave www.goldwave.com is a good recorder/editor - that will do that part of the job.

You will need some cabling if you don't already have it. Going from headphone output is also not ideal, but give it a shot (you may be able to compromise with the output controls on the walkman, and the input controls on your soundcard. Set the output of the walkman LOW to begin with and watch the meters in Goldwave), or borrow a cassette deck. 1/8" stereo to 1/8" stereo if you want to try using the walkman. Two mono RCA to 1/8" stereo if you can borrow a decent tape deck from someone.

Thanx emeric

Emeric, thankyou for your reply, if i could borrow a decent tape deck i cud do loads of stuff... the only thing i do have what is better than a walkman is a microsystem hifi in my room, but again has no outputs except the headphone which again is amplified, doubt itll be better... thanx anyway.

Yo 5UK with a surname:

Emeric did a great CDR for me from tape. That kind of motivated me to move toward the CDR media. I just finished mastering a collections of tunes, which were on tape and MD8 media, of a gal singer I work with. The tunes were over a ten year period and we kind of grew together and I learned and she learned. A great time.

Thanks Emeric for doing that and I thank you again for your permission to use a couple of your songs on a gift tape for a cancer golf tournament.

I can't begin to tell you how much fun I'm having with my Yam 2816 now that I can get around the box a bit.

Green Hornet:D  :D :D :p :p :p

Don't expect too much from digital noise reduction unless you are using some pretty pricey software. You can reduce some of the hiss but it leaves some pretty ugly aritifacts if you get too agressive. That is my experience with CoolEditPro compared to ProTools.

Aren't those songs available on CD or the net?

you should heed emeric's advice of borrowing another tape deck. A good tapedeck is probably much better than your walkman. You'll probably get some reduced hiss even without doing anything more. The restricted innards of a walkman might have led to sacrifices in the reproduction circuitry quality. Even the headphone jack of your other micro hi-fi is worth a try. It might still be better than the walkman audio.
