Okay I've taken this one this far. I know it can get clearer. But where?

Wow. That is tight.

Got the Seinfeld bass going and the freaky 1920's background vocals, the funk guitar...love the organ on this. How was all this done? Did you play everything yourself?

I mean, it's a strange track for me at least, but very well done. You have great clarity already, but one thing you might try to open it up more is take a little of the low end out of the main vocal. The voice is clear but on my setup here (bose bookshelf speakers w/ sub) it is escessively boomy and dominates the instruments at times and makes them seem smaller.

However, this is a unique enough number that I wouldn't necessarily know exactly what you're going for. Like I said, it already sounds pretty damn clear. Well done.

Hey, thanks - that's useful and plays into a doubt I had.

No, there's no way I could have done this myself. Mark Hamilton did the beats and background guitar, Tjarko Busink did the bass, left guitar and Hammond, and I did the song and the vocals.

I agree with heat. Everything sounds great but the vocal could use a low end roll off. I'd also compress the vocal more to smooth out the level as some parts are getting masked

Edited. Rolled off more low end. Didn't compress the vox more, but I did more automation on the track.

Yeah, I think it sounds better that way myself.

Yeah, you were right. And I've tweaked it some more and it sounds better again (but I didn't put that one up on Soundcloud.) Mr Miser, Mr Hit: thanks very much. Very useful.

Love the feel of this dobro - it brought to mind a lot of things but still sounds very unique. The backing vocals, organ and main vocal in particular come together great.

In terms of mix improvement I think the drums are kind of floating around somewhere at the back of the mix without really anchoring anything or having any presence. The performance is great, but for me they sound too brittle and too low. The only other thing is a little too much in the way of lip smacking sounds before phrases that you could cut out quite easily.

Other than that excellent work - if they make another Swingers movie, I'll campaign for this to be on the soundtrack :)

Edit - what does the title refer to by the way?

This is funky as.... Loving that bass man.

To me, the main voice sounds like it needs work on the high end. I'm pretty sure I hear a good bit of lip smacking and that kind of thing.
Is it heavily compressed?
Don't get me wrong, nothing's bad. I'd just tweak it.

The bass on the voice isn't a problem to me, so I guess you nailed that. :)

The only thing that I'd want 'clearer is the funky backing vocals, but again, I don't know that it's necessary. Just an idea.

I can totally see this in a Tarantino film!

Hey dobro, great tune!
I'm kinda new to mixing, but I guess I'd just repeat what everyone else already said about the lip-smacking but I might not have noticed if others had not brought it up already. The slap from the bass almost seems like it's in the same general area and the two sounds kinda dance around sometimes hinder the intelligibility of the words, though I can understand most of them. Really love the background vox and the general arrangement though. Really fun and quirky.

Thanks, you guys. I'll see to it. What you mentioned is stuff I hadn't even started to notice.

Very tight mix. In addition to the lip smacking, the thing I noticed is the P's and T's and a couple of K sounds really jump out a bit. Overall, enjoyed it very much. Quite creative.
