I would like to know if anyone has purchased the Tannoy Reveal Monitors, w/a Reveal Sub 10, and what they think of them. Or if you can recommend anything else in the pricerange that's better.

The other thing I'd like to know is what people think of Cakewalk Sonar 2.0XL.

i have the reveal blues (actives), they sound very nice in the studio but i've got mixes wrong on them before. I,ve also heard moniters with a clearer top end, but at 2or three times the price!

Reveals are a very honest monitor, easy to work with for reasonable periods without "ear fatique". By themselves they can be regarded as lacking bass but that is something experience overcomes. It is no different to having monitors that are bass heavy........you still have to learn how to interpret what you are hearing either way.

Toby, if you have got mixes wrong, don't blame the monitors. It happens to all of us and it is just a case of learning to use whatever monitors you have, correctly.

Bass heavy monitors will let you hear what's going on in the sub 250 Hz area, where in my experience the Tannoy Reveal actives will have you guessing.

I'll give it a couple of more mixes though (I've only done 2 so far on the Tannoys) before I'll consider getting the sub :)

I realize these monitors lack bass, that's why I'm also going to buy a Reveal Sub 10, so other than bass problems, what else?

I find it hard to mix down with a subwoofer. Its so much easier with just the speakers.

I have a consumer amp with two sets of speaker connections. I have the Reveals on one and a pair of Bose with an MTX sub on the other. I mix on the Reveals and then check on the other setup to get an idea of what's in the low end. Works for me.

I could see how you might thing that, but if you use a scope, and a nice EQ, you should be able to mix in the sub and keep everything flat, correct?

And also, I've heard the Proto-J's, and they're okay, but I've heard better.

No...

Theoretically, you'd think that would work, but in actuality, it doesn't...

...introducing EQ into the signal chain adds phase shift that mess up the sound... as well, room modes and standing waves cause the frequency response to change at different locations in the room, so that even if you flatten the response in one particular location, you move an inch away and the response changes drastically again......

I agree with Blue in a way. Although, your posistion would change the EQ, they are nearfields, so you shouldnt be moving a lot, and if you moved without an eq, it would still effect the acoustics.

I too have a pair of Bose 301 IV's, and I love them so much, that I went out and bought my dad some (201 IV's). i have them on a samson servo amp with a rane eq NOTHING BEATS EM!!!

And some people don't seem to realize that inserting an EQ to perfect the frequency response of the monitor/room would be a bad thing even if it wasn't for the phase problems. (Due to the frequency dependance of the reverbation time.)

I've heard nothing but good about tannoy.

I was just talking to an a guy I know that has been a rep for several big manufactures (so he goes to all the trade shows ect.).
He bought a set of the passive reveals when he heard them at a show when they came out. He bought them because he said they sounded awsome, and as he put it "nothing sounds good at trade shows" So he was impressed.

Knowing quality of equipment this guy has (thing mortal men can only dream of) I would say the tannoy's are a very safe bet.

F.S.

I need to know if anyone has used or heard the tannoy system 1000/ 800 or 600's these are dual concetric type speakers.
