tannoy reveal vs. event 20/20

Hi folks,
Ive read alot in here regarding monitor selection, and i believe that i have my future purchase narrowed down to these two. I have not decided wether or not to go active or passive. I would appreciate any and all opinions regarding these two items, and in the event that i do go passive.... a recomendation on a good amp to push them.

Don't own the Reveals, but own the Proto J's and the 20/20's
both are excellent with the 20/20's providing clear flat response
and clean bass reproduction. I have heard the Reveals and the pro's on these speakers are the bass is rich anddeep while the speakers maintains an overall even balance across the audio scope along with being magnetically-shielded.
Both are extremely fine choices!
 
I've got Tannoy Reveals (passive). Balance is the word which comes to mind in describing their sound. They give a good balanced sound. You can really hear what's going on in your mixes and where the instruments sit. I use them with a Samson Servo 170 amp which seems fine.

Event 20/20s have had so many rave reviews/mentions on this board that I'm interested in them myself, but I think they're twice the price of the Reveals so it will remain an entirely adademic interest.
 
They're not!
20/20's cost $299 while Reveals are at $350. Passive versions.
 
When I was monitor shopping a couple of years back, I had it narrowed down to Event PS6s and Tannoy Reveals.

I chose the PS6s at the time -- they are good monitors, but I've come to find that they, like the 20/20s, sometimes seem to gloss over problems a bit too much. It is a characteristic that can easily been compensated for, but I suspect the Tannoys are less forgiving - giving you one less thing to "learn" about with them compared to the Events.

UK prices - the Events are £100 more here. That's not quite twice as much, but it's quite a bit. They're not that common here either. I only found one online site selling them, whereas most places have Reveals.

Sounds like you would prefer the Tannoys... Are they really as transparent and as honest as you say (compared to your Events)? If so, which models are you referring to? The actives or passives? A few questions for all of you: I plan on purchasing a pair of passive Tannoy Reveals; are the active and passive models virtually identical sounding speakers? Would the choice of power amp pushing the passive Tannoys be a factor in the coloration (or discoloration) of an otherwise 'truthful' mix? I have a Hafler TA1100 power amp (100w); do you think this is enough to power a set of passive Tannoy Reveals? Or is it even worthy, quality-wise? Any input is always greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I am running Reveal passives with an Alesis RA-150 amp and frankly am more than happy......but a Hafler would definitely be a better option. Unfortunately, the Hafler in Aust., is about twice the price of the Alesis.
Which ever type you end up using (active or passive), I'm sure you wont be disappointed and ultimately your ears would become "tuned" to the speakers.

I have the Reveal Actives and I'm very happy. You'll find that with what ever you get, you'll still have to "learn" to mix with them. I find that a full sound on the Reveals is too bassy on my hifi system, so I've learn't to mix a little on the thin side and now they're fine. But that's just me. I plan to add the sub in the future.
There are so many variables that no one brand or model will sound the same in every room, to every ear. This is why we can give advice, but ultimately you have to make the choice.

I was comparing actives, so I don't know if the passive Tannoys sound the same. Without taking anything away from the Events (which I think are fine monitors), I think the Tannoys would be just a bit more "honest" with less tendency to be forgiving.

As far as amps for passive monitors -- you want to get as clean and powerful an amp as your budget will allow. The Alesis and Samson amps, while inexpensive, are not considered very high-quality units. Hafler's TA-series is their tap into the budget market and while I would consider it a notch or 2 above Alesis or Samson, for a high-quality amp, the minimum that should be considered is Hafler's P-series.

Thank you guys, for all your input; it is, and continues to be, invaluable... I'll try my Hafler amp for a while with a set of passive Tannoy Reveals (which will be in my very near future), and learn that... I can upgrade the amp later, if necessary. Thanks again!
 
I have the Event 20/20bas as my main audio monitors, and I have the Tannoy reveals (passive) as my secondary monitoring source, so it's real easy for me to A/B these. I feel that the Events are brutally honest, very flat, and a great monitoring system. The tannoys are an exceptional pair of monitors as well, but compared to the Event 20/20's, I notice a slight more bass on the Tannoys. Both are excelent monitoring systems for a project studio, and I wouldn't really recommend one over the other, I'm just glad I have them both! It's important of course to listen to your mixes on as many monitor-speakers-stereo systems as you can. If I had to pick one though and go with it, I'd have to pick the Events, just because of the flatter response. But you can't go wrong with the Tannoys either.
(real decisive huh!)
