I have some proto-j's i am running with a quiet clean amp. Do you think the b2031a's would be much of a step up? I am hoping someone has had the opportunity to A B them.

I am craving a little more low end.

The only thing Behringer is a step up from is Radio Shack stuff.

Here is kinda how the sub $1000.00 monitor totem pole is -

KRK V series
Mackie
Wharfedale
KRK RP
M-Audio
Tapco
Tannoy
Event
Alesis
ART
Samson
Nady
Behringer

Hey I'm no Behringer fan, but Nady, Samson, Alisis? Come on.
Thanks for the impartial opinion.

From what I've heard these actually get good reviews. Am I wrong on that? I know it's all relative but......

I guess it all depends on how good you are at working around hyped highs and lows. I had (have) a pair but I don't use them for mixing anymore. The mostly get used for synth speakers and such. I just didn't feel like they had a flat enough response. For the same price (or less) you could get a pair of Wharfedale 8.2A pros, which in my opinion are much better. Like I said, it's all personal opinion and really depends on how well you can work around any given sound quality.

Thanks Echelon.

I'll check out the wharfdale's. I should mention I will also be using these just for listening pleasure alot. I will be keeping the tannoys handy too. The mix I get with the tannoys seems to translate well to consumer stereos, so it's not like I am un happy with them. That being said I feel the need to bang my head once in a while and I don't feel the Proto-j's represent the low end that well either.

Well Since no one anywhere around here has the wharfedale's to listen to and the B2031a's seem to have a few problems. I took a trip to GC and tried the KRK rp8's and the m-audio Bx8's as well as some others. I ended up walking out with the BX8's for $399.00. if the RP8's would have sounded alot better I would have dropped the extra $100.00 but in their room the BX8's sounded awsome. Still messing with them. What I really need is their room!:)

Thanks

........ok the only mackies that come in under 1k are the HR624s...AMS has them for $429.99 each so total price is $859.98

HR824s are 589.98 each so it comes up to a little over 1k at $1179.96

and one more thing......wheres the scientific data to back up that opinion deepwater? well maybe it doesnt have to be scientific data but if a few other people concur with the list then ok.

not bashin you or anything....but if i repeat it to people i dont want to be wrong

I'd like to know how people feel about the Fostex Pm1s. I've tried to find posts about them, but i don't come up with much. They didn't even appear on Deepwaters list, but I have read a lot of good thing about them. And if the Wharfedales are as good as everyone says they are, why don't I hear more about them? I'm not trying to be flippant of contradictory for the sake of being so, I'm just trying to gather as much information as I can in the shortest period of time.

Did you try the search function here? I pulled up a few threads.

I pulled up a couple of threads, but there wasn't anything useful in them. No real discussion, it's almost like the PM1s don't exist here in any real context. I find this s little difficult to swallow, but it might just be one of those things that's just kind of universally regarded as being crap, like New Coke or Pepsi Clear.

Thanks for the help. It still comes to a close call, I'll just have to see what my gut tells me to do.

i understand what you mean....i went with the one piece of advice that actually works. "what do your ears tell you?" i went looking for monitors and ended up with the samson 65as and my ears liked them better than the maudio bx5s or the alesis mkIIs. I'm not talking up samson by any stretch though....a while back something ended up shorting out and it took 5 weeks for samson to send all the parts for repair and they still didnt send them all. the repair shop went with diodes from another company but got it working perfectly again.

Part of the problem is all I really have around here is a Guitar Center, and they don't carry a lot of the esoteric brands. Hell, they don't even carry Fostex, they have weird deals in place with other brands. It's all just the major name players, with little other choice and very slim differences in price range. Everyoen touts the Mackies as being the cream of the crop, but they just sound empty to me. Maybe absolute flat response is not a good thing in the end, I don't know. I think I'm gonna go with the consensus here and give the Wharfedales a shot. At worst they can only be as good as the Fostex, and I think that's ok.
