I've used the Eureka and the Focusrite Platinum Range stuff. The Presonus pre is much cleaner in my opinion.

that's interesting to hear a vote for the Eureka (or Presonus over Focusrite Platinum stuff in general).

it's a shame the Eureka also has the hidden cost of a $200 A/D card fir the option slot. both this unit and the VMP are suddenly looking more expensive than i had imagined.

You have to be careful when you read comments like "the platinum stuff". A lot of people are referring to the under $500 versions of the line. The consensus is that these products sound cheesy and are not worth your time. Two products in the platinum line that stand above the crowd both in the platinum line and against competitors are the Twintrak and the Voicemaster Pro.

These two are a cut above the rest of the line and in my own shoot out tests stand above the RNP, Eureka and Presonus products. I have done a shootout with VMP and a Great River side by side and there was only about a 10% difference in core sound quality. The GR of course being at the $1000 mark had more versatility as a preamp. The VMP had more versatility as a channel strip.
