tAain't no denying in the grand scheme of things.. this is a lot a hoopla about some really frivolous sh*t.I like Chamelon Labs, and in this day and age, $800 isn't all that much. Although I'm using an ART that was half the price. The people I see with Chameleon Labs, and when I look at them in the store, I do wish I could try one and see what an extra $400 gets me. But I wouldn't say avoid an $800 pre. I'd say try a $400 ART and maybe the $400 you save could go to buying a Pro VLA. You know what I mean? You either get one pre or a pre and a compressor. It was simple for this amateur.
No, I really mean I avoid thinking that if I walk to work, and only eat two or three times a week, I can soon have a preamp like this; PreSonus ADL 600 | Sweetwater.com, and think my songs are better. Maybe they sound better, but they still suck. And I'm still recording in my bedroom, or electric guitar in my tiled bathroom for that natural reverb sound.
Dog I love it though.

Gap pre-73 and rnp have plenty of gain. I use them both with ribbons and have no problem or excessive noise.
As to the rnp being a glorified guitar pedal, it is miles above stock pres and super quiet. I have nothing bad to say about it, and if you need two channels and an upgrade to enough gain for a low level mic, this would be my choice for cheap and great sound. The wall wart is annoying though.

I currently own an AT4050 condenser and am thinking of replacing it with an SM7b. Is this a good idea if I am looking for a softer top end without that brittle sort of sparkling edge? (But does it have enough top end? It seems to have a weird frequency response curve above 4k. How colored is the Sm7b? Very colored? And if I dont go with it, what is a good condenser to go with that is rounded off?
The preamp i am using is an Aphex 230 tube channel strip. But I have not only just panel absorbers in the vocal booth but also half of the booth is diffusors meant for recording - all over two walls and the whole booth ceiling. Because otherwise the booth would be too dead. Will the SM7 b not capture any of that room tone when the vocalist raps? (He has a big massive loud voice).
With the AT4050 i could switch the pattern to omnidirectional to be able to capture the tone coming off those diffusors - perhaps for doubling up and filling it out as much as possible before Eventide reverbs are added. But I wish there was a multi-pattern mic with a smooth top end.

I know I've had poor results eq'ing a ribbon to get that 'condenser top', but you might have better luck going the other way to smooth one out.

Well... there is the blue ones.
I'm ok now.
It's just a silly thing they do if you purchase one from them, they put a vintage type red knob on it instead of the blue one!
They do a very legitimate upgrade modification of the input and out put tranneys though!

I just painted all my knobs red and nothing sounds any different. I guess there is more than the color to the mods.

Don't you know there are starving recording artists in the third world who don't have any mics at all? Just buy a Digital Reference mic and ship that baby to me, and I'll make sure it ends up in the hands of a disadvantaged recording artist. You'll feel so much better afterwards-Richie
