Sytek, TLAudio 5001, opinions? Sebatron?

BTW, booda, since you're aksing about the TL Audio 5001 pres: I just reviewed the TL Audio 5051 Ivory 2 and it's an excellent unit. Same pre as the 5001. I'd highly recommend any of the new Ivory 2 series.

The Grace and Sytek are transparent whereas the 5001 is pretty warm, big and airy - in that tube sort of way. Although its hybrid design, its still real tubes running at high voltages. Just depends on what sort of sound you want.

Thanks Dot... I'll take more of a look (of your review) tomorrow after I get some sleep... I can't remember where I had recently read it , but I had come to think the TLAudio 5001 was a Toob unit. Tha'ts good news... I wish I could concentrate more right now So I could read it. Anyway.... I know the Sebatron is the unit I'd like to get but it's out of my ballpark at the moment. So I'm thinking of picking up one of these other 's and then in a few months sell it and pick up the 4000e. & who knows, one of these other units may just be what I'm looking for and I might save $700.

Harvey- thanks for clarifying the "Top end" of the RNP.

One more? - If the Peavy VMP-2 was so good why'd they stop making it? Anyone know?

Thanks everyone for your input and thoughts
B.

Dot- Thanks again... the TLAudio stuff is back on my list and the 5001 seems like quite the bargin. Nice review of the 5051 btw.
A couple thoughts...
This was what I had read that made me think it was more like a SP/VTB-1 (something w/just a coloring knob)...

"The HHB/TL Audio stuff is a transformerless IC pre followed by a 12AX7A line amp, kinda similar to the pre in a mid-line console feeding a "tube warmer" box. TL Audio did build a real Pentode tube pre in their Classic Series, but everything else they made uses that IC pre feeding a "tube driver." I've got one but just use it for a DI box for keyboards to avoid the mic pre IC stage."

Whats your opinion on the Optional four channel 24 bit digital output? Do you think they would be better Converters than my Aardvarks, or about the same? I like open and warm... but no matter what mic I use I have to give a little Qd boost around 8000khz to help take the blanket off my recordings. A friend of mine swears up and down that it's the Aardvark (or any low end) converters that cause this.

Can you drive one channel into another for more color, like w/ the Sebatron?

I also like the fact that the 5001 has a few more options (lo cut/mic pad/AD) than the Sytek,RNP units.?.

Thanks,
B.

How about I roll my eyes.

jslator:

the sebatron stuff on harmony central has been awful. however, i've seen some things at mojo pie where people tried to stack the top five pages. i came to the conclusion that none of them were actually connected to the companies in question. but, i dropped the top five page listing because of it.

i've yet to see more than kurt foster's article. i like a few opinions. better yet, i like to look an item over in a real work environment.

Hey ozraves, editing your post after someone has already replied to it is not good etiquette. My previous post now makes no sense. My apologies if you were editing it while I posted (and didnt see mine) but given the 12 minute gap between my previous post and your edit this seems unlikely.

My previous post was in reply to your original post which said words to the effect that you hadnt read any sebatron reviews by people that can be trusted. I have no idea if kurt foster can be trusted or not but his review was mentioned by two posters earlier in the thread, and I was just questioning if it was included in your statement of reviews not to be trusted (obviously not given your recent edit).

Anyway hopefully we will see more reviews in the future.

Apologies accepted. :) I edit the crap out of my posts.

I understand, I do edit a lot too. Sorry once again for any misunderstanding.

I look forward to Dot's thoughts on the two channel sebatron pre when he gets it. Does Dot or anyone know roughly how much they plan to sell it for?

I talked with Dan on the phone the other night about whether or not he'd actually get his hands on one. I appreciate Dan's opinions a lot so I'm anxious as well.

I'll tell you what . . .

If I can get my hands on one, I'll not only give a no-holds-barred objective evaluation. I'll use it as the exclusive pre on an entire session -- used on all tracks -- and post the results (downloadable MP3) for anyone who wants to hear.

If any manufacturer has the guts, tell them to put away their skirts and get a hold of chessrock, damnit. :D

I will too...

I'll even put my number here to make it convenient for them: 916-987-6692

We'll be waiting for the calls... Think we'll get any calls chessrock?

P.S. That really is the studio number!

I'll add my little pitch to Mr. Sebatron.

Mr. Sebatron:

If you want, then please submit your mic preamp to Mojo Pie for review. Mojo Pie gets over 2,000 unique visitors per week from every continent but Antarctica. In the rack right now I have preamps from Grace, Great River and FMR to put the Sebatron alongside. We test equipment by using it on actual tracking. The site published the very first reviews of the RNP and the Great River MP-1NV. Most of the readers are project studio enthusiasts but industry professionals (even people from your competitors) rely on Mojo Pie in making purchasing decisions. So, contact me if you'd like for Mojo Pie to review one of your mic preamps.

Steve, Mojo Pie

I've had a few email exchanges with Sebatron and plan on getting either the 2000e (with VU meters) or the 4000e.
