What do you think about this system?

N-Track Studio
M-Audio 1010 lt
Yamaha MG 10/2
Studio Projects B1

I'm going to be recording small vocal groups, acoustics guitars, and maybe some drums. I'm on a very limited budget ~$600 to start with. Thanks.

ask this on the n-track forum

the B1 is a great mike. others love n-track...

To tell the truth, for a budget that is, as you say, limited, you have chosen rather well. Don't forget mic stands, a pop filter, cables (more expensive than you think), and a shock mount for the B-1. As soon as possible, add another B-1. Note the color dot on the box of the one you get, and make sure the second one matches it. There are 3 colors. Best of luck.-Richie

Ya, well...

The reason is because I have been looking at a bunch of stuff and reading everything I could find on it. That's because I dont have the $600 or so dollars yet... I've been reading HOme Recording for Musicians for Dummies. I'm in a high school choir and want to get started in recording because we recorded a CD last month and I loved the environment. Seeing as I can't pay for expensive studio time I decided to start my own and record local groups in the area. As far as the money goes, I'm saving up.

another view...

While recording on a PC is a great way to go, I would also consider getting a standalone unit. Consider the Fostex VF80, or a Zoom 8 track (I forget the name of it, it's new). The Fostex, with a CDR will run $699.00, as will the Zoom.

One thing these standalone units offer is portability and stability. For instance, if you want to record the school choir, it's not practical to lug in a PC. Also, if your PC is running other programs and crashes, there goes your whole studio.

In a permanent set-up, the PC is a great option, but try to really think through what you'll want to do and this will help determine what you should buy.

Yeah I was considering that but the group I'm in is only around 20 people and I would not mind having them over to my house. I already have a great PC to use so I want to use it because it will save money. However in the future I might consider buying a standalone unit depending on how the PC based system works out.
