Hi there,

if you - just like I did some days ago - have problems using your middle-of-the-road computer for home recording, check out the following links:

A:)

Start out with the following Tips (win XP) - which make a lot of sense. They basically turn off all the XP nonsense that slow your system down

B:)
make sure DMA (direct memory access) of your HDD is enabled ... win XP DISables them permanently if there was a problem in the past- you need to switch it back manually. Details find in the following link:

C:)
your video-card is probably clogging up your PCI bus-throughput (video latency = probably set to 256). Set the latency of it at 96-128. Check your system with "Ulyses" and reduce the VIDEO latency using a program called "Dbldawg". Details on both prgrms find in the following link:

Those 3 links helped me speed up my system quite a lot and get rid of 98% of all the crackles, hickups, etc...

Thx to manning1 and noisedude for a lot of good tips, too!

cheers
Alfred

ps: could somebody make this sticky for a while????

thnx alfred. some other tips.
1. try to avoid fancy gaming cards.
matrox graphics cards seem to have fewer issues for some reason.
2. the same goes for usb. too many folks seem to have issues.
3. over spec your power supply so as you add more peripherals
power draw does not become an issue.
