I am using a Yamaha SY55 synth and the way I record it is by having an amp cord straight from the sy55 outputs to the preamp inputs and just record it like that but I always get some noise and its not totally clear.

It has MIDI (In, Out, Thru) but I don't know how to setup midi and record it. I have MIDI cables and my computer has a midi port. Would my synth recordings improve if I went down the midi road?

Yo Iceman of White:

I run my synth with a 1/4 inch cable into either the pre amp or directly into the recorder.

Your problem sounds like a bad cable or a bad connecter.

Turn on your rig and gently wiggle each cable connector and see if your noise quits and starts.

If you have just picked up the problem, it could be a cable. Those things like die sometimes by just hanging there.

If not a cable or a connecter, line noise? Or you have something turned on in your keyboard that is in conflict with something else. I've had that happen with my DX7 a couple of times.

Wiggle the cables and see what you get.

MIDI will allow you more flexibility for editing your performance but will not change your sound in any way. All midi does is "play" your keyboard but the sound still has to go thru audio cables into your soundcard.

You usually need some type of mixer or preamp to get a good signal going into a soundcard/recorder.
