Hi,
I have been sending this to people who are having the same problem. I have attached the tips and tricks that I have learned with cakewalk and
the xp-30.
Cakewalk is presently playing back midi sounds from the GM mode. In order to get it to play the sounds you want follow the instructions below.
To record into cakewalk you will have to move your patch sound into the memory of the xp-30 and transfer it to cakewalk from there. It will sound different when you do this as the sound effects will not be copied over. This is the same with every other synthesizer out there not just the
xp-30. It is just the way midi was created. It is usually better to turn off the fx when you are choosing the sounds so that you know what you are getting.
You will then have to apply your own effects once the track is in cakewalk. I know that this sound like a pain in the ass but there is no way around this. If you want to use the sounds just as they are then you are going to have to record the track manually into cakewalk. This means that it is not a midi track and you won't be able to move notes around once it is in cakewalk.
I tend to do this as trying to re-create the sounds in cakewalk is just too difficult and time consuming though it will teach you loads about the individual effects and how they work. Unfortunately there is no way around this. There is no harm experimenting with both though.
To assign a patch to a part on xp-30:
1: Make sure whole keyboard is selected. This is done through the key rang. It must be off. Turn it on only when you want to split the keyboard.
Press "perform", "edit", "common" "common".
2: Make sure that the performance is not in layer mode. Hold down shift key and then press "solo". This can also be done in the above menu.
3: Choose the patch. Press "perform" and "patch" together, select the part number and then select the patch. Press "perform" and this is selected.
Don' t bother with the effects.
This is now in the temporary area.
To save it write this to the user bank.
1: Make sure that write protect is off. Press utility select 5 and set internal to off. Press enter.
2: Press utility and write. Select user number to be written to and press enter. Don't worry about recording over the factory setting as you can always re-initialise them. If you want, save all of the patches of the xp-30 on your pc. All you do is a bulk dump of the entire xp-30 and save it in cakewalk as a .mid project. This is then a back for you in-case anything happens to the xp itself.
When recording to cakewalk:
1: Set up channel source in Cakewalk to the same channel in keyboard. (Track properties). In keyboard, Make sure "perform" is lit up. Press system edit (lit up) and part. Set channel. Make sure the Key rang is off.
2: Prepare cakewalk for a bulk dump. This is how cakewalk stores midi sound. You will have to do this every time you want to use a different midi sound in your project. To do this In cakewalk Go to view- sysx. This should open a sysx window. Each bank number is that same as a track number.
3: Press the down red arrow ands click on the "you start dump on instrument"
4: On the xp-30 make sure you are in "perform" mode. Press utility, select 4 xfer. Choose perform as type. Select channel and cakewalk bank (track number) number (For ease keep banks and channel numbers the same).
4: In transfer to user select the part number.
5: Press Enter.
6: Make sure that cakewalk is received it. (You will see the number in the info box increasing) Set this to load every time you open the project by putting a tick on auto in the options in cakewalk.
7: Press the green arrow pointing up so that the data will be sent to the beginning of the track when you open the project.
8: Save this in sysx message box (make sure it is being saved as sysfbinary). Don't bother saving the name in the sysx box as it won't be saved. Just put the name in at the beginning of the track in the normal project view.
9: When ready save the entire project as a .mid file or else all the sysx data will be lost.
10: When you re-open the project you should see a vertical line at thebeginning of the track.
Never save audio and midi data together on the same project file. Save the audio together and save the midi together. Then merge the two projects when you are ready to do the final mix. The reason for this is that cakewalk
is incapable of storing the two together. If the project is saved as a .mid file than all the audio material will be lost and vice versa. It is very
important to remember this.
Now if you decide to go the midi route. Do save all the un edited data in a file on its own incase you do not like the fx modifications in cakewalk. Otherwise you will have to start over as you can not undo these changes.
Hope this helps.
Ray.
