is there an online resource which will give me definitions and descriptions of various synth components, so lfo's,cut-offs,modulators,etc....

First, I'm going to assume that in asking about "synth components" you're primarily interested in subtractive synthesis.

I found THIS. It's a little hard to read, but he has audio links so you can hear what he's describing.

Also, HERE. An excellent page.

These should get you started.
