It wasn't quite a question, it was more an expression of puzzlement. I am just struggling to understand why disabling the audio device could possibly solve your problem...
Did you have another audio device, perhaps? Maybe something built in to the motherboard? And that's what you disabled? Then that might make some sense to me. The two devices might have been conflicting...
I have NT 4 here (at work) with an SB PCI 64V audio card... being NT, it might not be arranged identically to Win98 -- but I have no "wave audio device" at all listed under the Media Control Devices branch. There is a (MCI) Sound entry, but it has no "do not use this device" setting...
