Sydney Group buyers (pre's/mics)

My order at the moment is around US$350 - obviously I would love to have direct shipping from China, which would allow me to up my order but I've been sitting on the fence here because there is NO WAY I want to increase chances' workload on this GB.
 
If we left the price the same so no need for re-calculation by chance, but asked him to request [from the manufacturer] shipment of mics/pres be shipped to australia? Is that increasing the workload for him?

I've no idea, just throwing it out there.

I'm about to pay for my order. I'm guessing this issue has too many logistical nightmares. I'm still open to suggestions but don't want to miss the deadline.

By the way qiktune, I'm also in Camden. It's a small world.

I am not sure this is valid, but do any of you know of a music store that we could ship to? perhaps a dealer (like a music/audio store) could have some advantages. (I really don't know)

Hi Chance,

I have offered my facilities previously. I have warehousing facilities with forklift and storage for a large number of items. I could easily handle a number of containers currently. Of course, in a number of months this may change but I have 2 premises and depending on the number of units I could commit space for the coming 6 months.

As I suggested earlier, if you were willing to ship directly from China, I will happily allow the use of my facilities as a place for pickup or local postage. My only fear being that I would also be responsible for the 15% tax on imports over $1000.

If all Aussie buyers could add the 15% and maybe a small handling charge then you can use my premises. I will personally post the remaining items registered Australian post which will be a substantial saving based on your quoted figures from USA.

Hi Chance,
I will do whatever is necessary to ensure that the Aussie GB participants get the best value. If it means setting up a dealership then I'm open to it. Do dealer get exemptions from duty? I'll need to do some investigating or can someone already answer this?

An import is an import regardless of who it is and distributors, under most circumstances still pay import duties. To my knowledge, the only two common exceptions would be either 1) If the shipment value is less than $1000AU, or 2) If the items are being shipped for warranty reasons which I believe exempts them from duties.

Mate, I think your offer is awesome but if you're only "attracting" a couple of local buyers I wonder if the "direct from China" thing is going to be worth the trouble. Only Chance would know just how many Aust., guys are participating.......I recall there were some at T/rock but I think they opted to deal direct with Chance, etc., which is something, that should I order anything, I may probably do as well..........mainly because I would only be spending around $200 (ie: no duties). The thing is, that particularly at this late(ish) stage Chance can't easily force people to join in the "direct from China" group whether it be Aust., buyers or guys from the UK/Euro regions.

I know what you mean. The numbers are everything. However, based on the quote Chance posted for shipping to AU i.e.

Then if I only look at my order of

2 x pres approx 17lbs
2 x 310s approx 20lbs
1 x 1200 approx 10lbs

I'm guessing these weights based on mics and pres I have bought previously. Based on the quote my order would be roughly $340 for shipping. This makes my order just under $1000. If i'm out with my calculations then it may pop me over $1000 at which time I pay a further 15%. I'd rather spend the extra $340 on more gear. I have budgeted $1000 for this GB.

I don't know if it's worth it or not. If Chance wants to send shipments direct to 1 location in each country then I am offering my facilities. If not then I'll just order direct like everyone else.

Duties wouldn't take into account the postage. The package will have the value being imported and surely postage isn't included as you aren't importing "postage". I'll check with customs today.
 
I may be wrong, but generally it's the value of the package including postage. Well, this was what happened to me last time. Maybe they ripped me.

From memory, the basic formula goes like this......eg:

Customs (declared) Value .......$1000
Customs Duty 5%......................$50
Shipping costs.........................$200
Value of Taxable Import (VOTI) $1250

GST @ 10% ............................$125

Therefore total payable is Duty + GST..... $175


I've been through this too many times :D
 
Nice of them to put a tax on a duty. Talk about double dipping. So it looks as though the actual cost of importing is 17.5% above value based on your formula. All the more reason to import direct.

Chance, how many units to Australia are we talking?

I think the thing that has to be "watched" if doing a combined/direct from China approach is the total import costs payable and how that is then "distributed" amongst those involved as it's not impossible if it is just divided equally, that the costs to someone with a small order may be more than if they stuck with the current "via Chance/US" system.

Yeh, starts to get a little complicated. I would need a list from Chance of all the orders being sent to AU and the value for each participant. We could then determine the correct percentages to each and ensure everyone pays the correct amount.

I still recon even small orders would save even factoring in the 17.5%. If you bought an ACM1200 for $110 and add $19.25 being the 17.5%, it's $129.25. Add registered post @ $13 for eastern seaboard the cost is $142.25. It will cost Chance $73 from USA to AUD which is $183. There is still a saving of $40.75.

I would like to know the numbers though. It would need to be all in or none in. I certainly don't want to increase Chances workload. I'll be happy to take some off him as long as I don't spend the rest of the year mailing out hundreds of packages.

Maybe its just but it seems nuts to be charged a duty for cost of shipping. I believe you ausrock, but would like to hear it from the horses mouth. I just don't get the logic, the postage isn't what you are importing.
 
There not charging Duty on the shipping. They are charging GST on the shipping and the Duty.
 
I just checked out USPS postage charges as it occured to me that the $507 semed a bit high and also that the USPS have restructured a lot of their o/seas charges since I last imported anything, anyways the USPS options are..........:

..........the $507 relates to the Global Express Guaranteed service which is the most expensive and 70lb is the maximum weight. A 10lb parcel should cost approx., $131 for a 1 - 3 day service.

Express Mail International has a limit of 44lb, a 10 lbs parcel costs approx., $63 for a 5 day service.

Priority Mail International has a 66lbs limit, a 10lb parcel costs approx., $56 with a 6 - 10 day service.

These figures are probably $US, don't include insurance and from past experience arbitary........take the same parcel to 3 different US Post Offices and you'll get 3 different prices.

Are these currant prices? When I went to the USPS last week, they told me that as of 08, they dropped some of their overseas services.
