the problem is when you record - then you mix - then you record some more -etc.

Also, doesn't look like there's anyway of saving external plugins setup to template

u save them as a favorite. it makes it easy to turn them on and off that way (for both external instruments and effects)

Sounds like you need more I/O then. Unless I am doing drums, I have plenty of I/O to record stereo tracks and have all my outboard hooked up.

Please explain - this may be a much easier way for me to add in my external effects.

more hardware io would solve the problem, but so would more flexible software. seems like a software fix would be more efficient use of resources.

Agreed.

I would like to just be able to change "templates" mid recording/mixing........

easy. Create an instrument or effect, setup its I/O, right click on it's name and select add to favorites. Now it will be available when u click the favorites button. This is global so it's template independent

U can also associate a midi device with each external instrument/effect so you can control it and automate it via midi

about the automatic latency comensation on external fx plugins. So cubase "pings" the external effect. But what if it's a reverb setup with a pre-delay - is there a danger cubase will compensate out the pre-delay?

Good question - not really sure on that one. I set it up w/o a pre-delay so the compensation is a static amount, and its VERY small......
