How does it work? I kinda don't want to know because then I will want to upgrade to 3, but I'm really curious how it works.

It is super simple.

You add an outboard effect just as you ad an input channel.

In my case, I specified that there was an outboard effect that went out sdpif/back in thru spdif and I named it "Rumour". In my plugin list, the Rumour shows up, and you use it like a plugin (other than automation).

And I even think that Cubase "pings" the hardware and then automatically adjusts for the delay. Or something like that. Pretty sweet.

:D :D

So does it burn the effect to the audio then? Or is it like an insert where if later you don't like it you can take it out and choose something else?

That would be really cool if it is option #2...I have a TC electronic M300 that I use for verbs since I don't care too much for the verbs in the box. It would be sweet not to have to bounce tracks through the unit and rerecord them onto a seperate track where I always have to keep the original track around in case later on in the mix, the effect isn't sitting right.

It's option #2. It works just like any other plug in.

It works basically like a traditional aux send on a console. Nothing is written to anything until you export. Think of it as an aux send with latency compensation. It's a beautiful thing really:)

I didnt hear none of this, I didnt hear none of this,I didnt hear none of this,I didnt hear none of this,I didnt hear none of this,I didnt hear none of this,I didnt hear none of this!

Must fight the feeling :(

:D

Ohhhhh man. I really wish I hadn't asked now. Damn, that is pretty sweet.

If any of you are looking at SX3 and don't currently have a copy of Cubase, PM me and I'll tell you how to save $200.

the only thing that's kinda of silly as far as I can see is that if you use a set of I/Os on an external fx setup, they are disabled from the inputs and outputs menus. So if you decide you want to temporarily use those channels for something else you have to delete the external fx and then add again later.

Am I wrong?

It makes sense to me that it would work this way. Cubase uses the I/O to "ping" for delay times so it knows how to recalculate the latency. If you use those same i/o ports for something else either it would be delayed (based on the outboard loop that may not exist anymore), or it would have to undo what was already done concerning the external insert loop. Why not just use other inputs and outputs?

yes, but what i'm saying is that I use a patch panel. So say I was using inputs 1&2 for return from my reverb unit. Then I decide I want to record some new vocals, so I unpatch the reverb and patch in my preamp. Now, it looks as if in order to record inputs 1&2 on cubase, I have to delete the external FX I setup for the reverb, and add vst inputs 1 back in again. Then when I'm done, in order to go back to using the reverb, I have to create the external fx all over again. Is there a way around this?

not really. if you have a sound card with limited i/o this would not be the most useful thing

Is there a sound card with unlimited i/o? I have 12 in 12 out, but I'm using them all for external gear. Wish I had more in fact.

Change the routing inside your vst connections window. Otherwise, just do the 2 second repatch that it takes on a patchbay. Good things come to those with the teeniest bit of patience;)

my whole point is that external re-patching is not sufficient. There is no way I can see around deleting the plugins in vst connetions to free up the i/os - which of course means you need to recreate them when you're done - not ideal.

It really isn't that hard to have a template for recording, then when you mix, just set up all your effects (as you would anyway), including the externals.......

C'mon guys, it's not THAT hard at all.

Or, just get more I/O!!!!! :D
