I have been looking for an all in one DAW with 16 tracks at once. I think I found what I want with the SX-1. It seems like I can basically ditch my current mixer and rack gear with this puppy! Now, how good are the mic pre's and the effects? Am I gonna be able to apply any effects to any track and if so, can I just ditch my rack effects as well?

As long as I been lurking in the Tascam forums. I have never heard anyone complain or grip about this unit.

The pres on my Tmd4000 are pretty good. the pres on the DM24 are good also except for the trim pots ( which can be fixed by Tascam). Those guys with the SX-1's simply just jump in now and then and state how much they love the unit.

The only downfalls that I have read about the unit on the tascam forum are 1. If something happens to any part on the unit, your stuck ( because its all inclusive ) 2. It's big and heavy as hell.

If I did own the gear that I own now, I would get one.

It's a overlooked piece if you ask me.

Oh and you can still use your rack effects , although the Sx-1 has it's own internal effects.

Not enough access to the sx.

Well, life is good,I'm 72yrs old, and on the 5th of july 2012 a Tascam SX1 landed in my home studio,I've down-loaded the manual, and printed it off today, friday the 13th of July. I have disconnected my BR-1600cd recorder, and hooked the speakers up to the SX1,now,theirs confidence for you.I have just played the demo, hmm, very good, now!, what buttons do I press to record audio, do I need some kind of interface to record a guitar, keyboard etc tell you what, seeing that this question is not answered or explained in the manual, i'll just pop the question to one of those genius's at theTascam Forum. I'll be back to finish this reply to the thread in a little while..

Enter the HDR page/ menu and record arm the tracks you wish to record to. You will of course need to make sure the physical inputs are routed to the HDR record tracks. The Routing menu/page will allow you to take care of this. If you have not done so yet, connect any computer monitor to the 15 pin VGA connector and the SX1 becomes VERY easy to navigate through and use. You will also need to make sure the outputs of the HDR tracks are routed to your choice of mixer return/channel in order to hear playback. I think you may even be able to just change the monitoring choice on the upper section of the console to automatically route the HDR "mix" directly to the stereo mix bus. I am not 100% on the last part as I am two hours away from my SX1 as I write this.

I've only had mine for about four months but am totally happy with the sound, routing options and overall performance. As others have stated before, the SX1 line has been highly underrated. I will be looking for another to use as a parts source when needed.

I hope this has been somewhat helpful.
