surround sound

ok, so i want to start surround mixing. ive got 8 speakers and 8 amps, and an 8 i/o card. now how do I start. I dont quiet understand panning (ie. guitar to back left) and how that would be done in surround. any suggestions? is special software needed? links?
 
It isn't cheap! You need some kind of dolby decoder. I know theirs people here that will help! What music program are you using now?
 
you really need a software program that has a surround sound panner. this gives you a 2 dimensional panner to work with (as opposed to one that just gives you left or right panning, i mean). you can do it other software program, but it takes a lot of tedious panning and fading work to get it done perfect. and even then, it doesn't always sound quite right.
 
can you suggest any software................NOT pro-tools?
 
The mixing is easy - Nuendo, Samplitude...

The ENCODING - That's gonna go several thousand in hardware & software just for a very basic AC3 5.1 system.

Minnetonka Software has a basic encoder for $100, a more featured one for $500, and a real expensive one for $2500. I think Wavelab does encoding along with a lot of other handy things for $700.

I haven't used Minnetonka's Discwelder, but I have used some of their older audio software which was really first-rate.
