I just went and poked around with some mics and headphones for a bit and I thought I would go through every mic and compare them all.
I started with the cheaper ones so as not to get spoiled if the better ones kicked thier ass from the beginning. Weird logic I guess.
I started with the Sennheiser e609 silver, kinda makes me sound more nasally, it has a weird mid bump that is great for toms and guitars, can be very nasty on some voices. Sounds good otherwise, on my voice I give it, eh, a C+.
I went on to the Sennheiser 504, the tom mics... sounded less nasal, and different, but decent, I shoot it a C+ also.
Popped in the Beyerdynamic Soundstar Mk II, sounded very nice, less nasally than both of the others, and had a pretty nice top. I'll go with a B on this one.
Went with Sennheiser e602 (yes, the kick mic) and wow, I was quite impressed. On my voice it sounded very very good, although a bit scooped, which might be waht made me like it, as it had no nasal sounding-ness to it. I give it a B+, surprisingly enough.
Next I plugged in my Sennheiser MD-441, and there it was... the smoothness. This mic IS all its hyped to be. Very smooth, very nice, very worth the money. It had no mid range nasal or harshness, the top end was smooth and had a nice buttery rolloff somewhere, it just sounded nice on me. Its always my 1st try on guitars too, and often stays there. For $259 used, this mic simply cannot be beat. Score is an A.
Next up, and the last one I tried, the Soundelux U-195. To my surprise, the Soundelux sounded remarkably similar to the 441. Very smooth sounding throughtout the entire range, very good mids and top. The top is, however, brighter than the 441, good or bad depending. More bottom too, and I tried it with different fat and roll off settings and different distances. Smooth mic, this one is worth the cash too, but in a fight between this and the 441, it would be VERY hard to pick one. The 441 matched very close in smoothness of sound and overall sound to the Soundelux. I give the soundelux an A too.
I think the biggest thing I got out of this test was how good the MD-441 is compared to the rest of them. Its just plain great. I see them go for $300-$400 all the time, and I would say at that price if I was going for a main mic for my studio, it would NOT be a like-priced condensor if I had the option of the 441. It stood very close in characteristic to a $1200 large diapragm mic, and I would bet the farm that with a little EQ you could make it do anything you wanted it to, including matching the Soundelux.
I think I want another 441.
Ok, useless banter, but I've seen worse.
Peace!

Very Interesting

I also bet that being a dynamic it is very quiet as well.
Is that the MD model that everyone uses for drums and guitar cabs or is that a different model?

Tube, if you ever try the 441's arch rival, the Beyer M88, let us know what you think of that one too.
It's not likely that the 441 would work as well on my vocals due to habits like popping P's and mild sibilance, although I'm working on vocal techinque to counter that.

Chris

Its not a sibilant, pop prone mic in my opinion.
Its just smooth. I would like to try an M88 next to it.

Tmix, you arent thinking of the 421 are ya? Common mistake.

The 441 is indeed one of the best mics around. My first choice for horns.

The M88 is another great mic, a real classic, but it has a different sound. Great too, but just different. More high end and the proximity is more prominent IMHO.

Both the 441 and the 88 are hyper cardioids, but both have a very nice off axis response, sooooooooo much nicer than an SM57!

But the price of a 441 was some $750 a couple of years ago and the 57 $79. :D

The 441 is the absolute top in dynamic mic technology, period!

For blues-based rock though, on my voice, the SM57 (and 421) is more effective than the M88 or Soundstar MKII.

I think the Soundstar is also a great mike for those that want something they can use for live performance and studio vocals.
The issue with the M88 for me is that I have to be a mile away
due to the proximity effect, too far to use in a typical performance
venue like a club. The Soundstar is quite good for this though.

Tube, have you heard the "old" 421's? They sound smoother than the current MKII and aren't "bright". Some like the new one's better on instruments due to the better transient response.

Glad to hear the 441 seems to be a good mic. I just received a 441, which I got off Ebay for $201.- in mint condition. I bought it coz many people recommended it in this forum and I will use it for my tenor sax. As soon as I have checked it out I'll post my experience.

I have had very good results with my 441 as well. It is very "condenser like" in its detail, and very dynamic like with its warmth.

I have an M88-tg and a 441. I also very much like my m260.

Dynamics rock!

Chessparov, you're right, the proximity of an M88 is huge. If you want a similar sound you might like the M69, less proximity and less expensive.

The old MD421 has a less brighter sound than the newer because the coil in the MK2 is aluminium. The old coil is copper.
I like the MK2 very much on heavy guitars.

Giganova, you'll like the 441 on sax! Don't mic it to close.

Beez, the M260 is a great mic but be careful, ribbons are fragile!

Yeah, the M69 is also underated IMHO, and if I didn't already have three other handheld choices besides the M88TG it'd be next. Don't care as much for the Shure Beta dynamics on my voice, on other singers they have sounded excellent.

I finally got my Sennheiser 441 and I am amazed. What a great mic! Tested it against the Neumann KM184 and can't hear any difference when recording my tenor sax. For sax, the 184 is slightly more accurate, though, while the 441 is clearly better for vocals IMHO.

I've been looking at the km183-185. Isn't it a pain that you have to buy a new mic for each pattern?

Which one is the most all around useful? The cardiode?

I want one of these 441's! Where can you get them, ebay seems to be clean out of them.

Just keep your eyes open and be patient, unless you wanna spend $750 on one new.
The were REALLY abundant about 2months ago, and cheap too. It has died down, as everyone sucked them right up.
Patience, friend, patience. Well worth the wait.

Anybody notice how the Senn 421 is the mic of choice for Sodamn Insane.

i was watching a documentary on him, and not only is the 421 his (and all of the ba'ath party) mic of choice, it has been since the late 60's.

i bet many have survived the looting and will end up on ebay

"sennheiser md421 in good/fair condition, some cluster bomb and small arms damage (may be contaminated with depleted uranium munitions dust). comes with a free bust of darius and assorted cuniform tablets."

Darius was a Persian King. Why would members of an Arab Nationalist Party have busts of a Persian Monarch?

why not?

"At least 80 percent of the 170,000 separate items stored at the National Museum of Antiquities in Baghdad were stolen or destroyed during the looting rampage that followed the US military occupation of Baghdad. The museum was the greatest single storehouse of materials from the civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia, including Sumeria, Akkadia, Babylonia, Assyria and Chaldea. It also held artifacts from Persia, Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire and various Arab dynasties. "

Sorry. I was thinking you meant a Bust of Darius that was looted from the home or office of a Baath Party Official (along with his collection of German microphones).

Talking of MD421s, I've just found out I have a U-5. Is that good or bad?
