I've been using a sure sm57 to record my vocals in the "studio". I've heard this is a pretty good mic, but Im beginning to think its more suited to live performances and was wondering what I should get to replace it. It seems to only work in extremes, meaning the vocals always seem weak and tinny or way to big and bass-e.

You would probably like a large-diaphragm condenser, it's a typical choice for vox. AT has some quality budget choices. sm57 is most often used for guitar cabs or snare drums, though I don't mind it on vox at all. How much have you experimented with placement? What are you running it through? I usually have it pointed roughly at my nose, at an angle to avoid plosives.

By angling the 57 a bit, you can also avoid some proximity effect (boominess). I kind of dig the 57 on vocals too. I definitely wouldn't want it to be my only choice in microphone though.

Check out the MXL V67g, its cheap but shockingly good.
