I got a Tama Superstar for $800 from my drum teacher. The thing is amazing. Its like... 25-30 years old. It is so much better than today's Superstars. I fucking love this set. I have finally found the set I want. Kinda surprising... I was expecting a Force 3005... but to be honest, this drum set sounds better than a lot of maple drum sets I have tried. Ill post pics as soon as I take pictures. The best part is that I got really nice hardware (2 straight stands, 1 boom stand, 1 hi hat stand, and one snare stand). I love these drums. But now I must seach ebay to find a matching 16" floor tom. Does anyone know what wood was used on the old Superstars? My teacher isnt sure, but he thinks its either birch or a birch/maple hybrid. Anyways, I'm really excited, and can't wait till I get home (I'm in my dad's office now) and play it for real. And all i had to give was $800 and my old shitty drum set :D.

Can we have pics? Also a close up of the grain and the badge.

No, the Imperialstars were made of mahogany. The Superstars were made of birch.

The Superstars are, indeed, of all birch construction--the top of line in
their day .

I bought a set of them in black lacquer for $500, 'bout 6 years ago-- the previous
owner was *upgrading* to the current Starclassics

For $500, I got 10"12"and 13" TT, 16"and 18" FT, and 22" BD
Best money I've ever spent.. the drums sound fab ! :D

This is why pictures are good, so we can tell what wood is used on this particular kit. :p

Yes Phil, you're right. My mistake. 6 ply birch. I confused the Superstar kit with a Superstar Snare Tama used to make called Super Mahogany.
Qwarks, I am extremely envious of you right now. Black Superstars. Does it get any better than that?
Cheers

I'm pretty sure its birch. But it sounds really nice. The emblems are there, but on soem drusm they are peeling off, and since they r metal, the edges are really sharp. But it says superstar. My snare is a Mapex Precious metal series Bronze Black Panther though.

OK, I took the pics, as soon as the AOL at my house starts working, I'll post em...

Does anyone know where I can get an old Tama SUpertsar 16" floor tom? Preferably from the late 70's-early 80's?

Still need to position the drums, cymbals, and hardware in a way that they will fit... Im currently having trouble, the double pedal takes lots of space and thats a problem cause I can't position my hi hats the right way.

I have an old Superstar 18" floor tom like yours but it is Green laquer. I wish I had your natural 18". I bought it on Ebay for $75 and it came with a case. it's in great shape. You might find a 16" on ebay eventually. Those old Superstars are nice drums.
