Cant listen to the new mix right now, but as far as your process, it's a little caveman-ish but thats the way I do it too, except you gotta run it into the "line in" not the "mic".
I'll give it a listen later on.

Not at all, I wouldn't do that in this forum....now if this was the Cave...... :D

Like I said, you need practice (as we all do) with your pitch, which comes from experience. But the actual tone of your voice is cool.

Why the line in? I think I tried that once and everything was barely audible
 
Oh, and BTW. . .

The "new mix" is a completely new song haha. I got tired of "Sunshine of your Love".

Because it's easy to add gain; impossible to remove clipping...
 
I think the drums sound better with the new song, everything else still sounds pretty rough, but a little better than 'sunshine'. Just keep working at it. :)

I used a click track, borrowed some headphones from some friends, and got that Recorderman thing working better (picking up the ride/right side of the set more).

I think the lows seem really crowded alot, and the snare's hard to hear, but I hope that's just me. Iduno, what do you guys think?

Listening as a I type:

Performance sounds much tighter. Still very, very roomy sounding. Sounds like your micing the guitars from another room. Not hearing any bass guitar. Drums sound better, but still need some work to get them to jump out through the mix. Thats gonna be tricky with just 2 mics though. Ahhh, theres the bass. I can hear it now that the guitars stopped. :p This sounds like a live band recording. Pretty cool in that regard, but thats not the effect most home-recordists go for. Not too bad though. Definitely getting better. :)
 
I know what you're saying about the guitar's sounding far away in the left channel, I tried to make it light and far away sounding. I put the mic like 2 inches away from the speaker. I think my amp may just suck, or my mics. I thought that was how you're supposed to mic guitars.

I totaly agree about the bass. I didnt realize how low it was until I burnt a cd and heard it in my car. I think I need to go back in and take some low out of the guitars so I have more room for the bass and the kickdrum. It sounds real bad when i turn the bass guitar up any higher.

The "live-effect" thing . . . I just dont know how about that lol. I can't make anything sound anything BUT "live". I'm sure it comes with practice. I can deffinately hear the difference between my stuff and the things you do, Greg_L, and I deffinately understand what you mean by "live sound". What's it take to get that more "studio" sound. Just lots and lots of takes till it's perfect I'd guess?

Also, with the roomy sound, I put varying degrees of the reverb on the tracks. Maybe I should try doin one of these songs without using ANY reverb. I just am always trying to get that Zeppelin/Bonham/Page sound. Does the reverb even have anything to do with the "roomy" or am I just sounding stupid? lol :rolleyes:

If your adding reverb before the mic (through a pedal or on the amp itself) then it will sound extremely roomy, always good to add reverb in the software. My recording get that same "roomy" sound your talking about and a lot of that has to do with room sound treatment and using cheap dynamic mics. Your getting better though, just keep at it. More mics (decent ones), maybe some Auralex or 703 in the room your recording (by the way, are your drums in a corner?) and a better soundcard should yield you the result your after. I like the guitar sound, the amp is fine.

I add all the reverb in my software.

They were in a corner, still kind of are, I moved them so they are easier to get the headphones to. My room's really small tho, I can't move them anywhere

No problem. I'm no pro by any means, I'm just telling you what I hear. I think you're just going too crazy with the reverb. If you're micing the guitars that close, then its gotta be just too much reverb. Cut some of the decay time, or make the room effect smaller. Just back things off until it sounds more natural and present in the mix.
 
I think it might be that I didnt have the mic pointed at the speaker. I sort of lean it against with it pointing straight down. I'm gona try and find another way to hold the Mic up straight and close.

Or maybe just get a condensor :p

Condensers are great for your drum overheads, but not necessary for micing an amp.

And get a mic stand. You don't have to point it straight at the speaker cone, but you definitely want to be able to control where you are pointing it.
 
I've got mic stands. . . It's just I cant make it go low enough to get to my Mic w/o tilting it away from the speaker. I'm just setting the mic on a low stool.

Put it on a folded towel then, get at least some vibration isolation...
