Summer Love - Feedback please

Finally works.

Sounds good man. Another solid Ido love song.

My only nits are the guitars. They sound great, but maybe they're a little too centered for my taste. I'd like to hear the rhythms wider to fill the stereo field and let the solo stand alone. Also, I think this could use some background harmonies or some oohs and ahhhs. Yeah, definitely some oohs and ahhs.

Thanks Dogman, ksounds, Ray, David, Greg

I find the rhythm guitar to be a little monotonous at times. Maybe some pads in the back would make the accomp. more interesting.

Yeah the rhythm guitars are following the piano which I'm a master of (lol... not) so it's pretty simple stuff. I've been playing around more with the computer stuff in Sonar lately so adding a pad would be a good exercise. I'll play around with it in the next few days. I might redo the solo. I was using Mike's SG which is real nice. I think I could do a better solo though. ;)

I love the picture.:D Is it from Endless Love?
The picture is some random Google pic. I think I Googled "beach love" or something like that. :)

I just uploaded a remix a few minutes ago with a few changes:
- increased the bass by a couple DB's (per Ray's request)
- increased the piano and panned it far left (seems to balance the mix better)
- added some reverb to the solo (it was kind of dry).

:D:):D:)

Can you detail what this was recorded on? Your base studio recording gear.

Also: All of those who can't find "nits" are you speaking about the song, the recording performance, or the mix? I am just trying to gage what the others on this board consider worthy of praise.

Personally it's not my style of music but i felt it dragged a bit. Also, I am a drummer first so those drums were the first thing that were screaming at me to be changed (completly). I am a guitar player second and that is the second thing that grabbed me. I like the guitar sound but the performance felt mechanical to me. The solo was actually pretty cool but I would work on it a bit (performance, not recording). The mix was good overall.

(This is not a feel good board where we all praise and never critique right? If so I'm going to feel like a jerk). Over all I think it's a good effort but those are my opinions and we are a here to improve ourselves right?

I have more to say but I fear there will be retribution lol. PM me if you want more critique. If not, record on brother, you do have some talent there.

thanks

I tracked 7 tracks on an ADAT (minus solo) then downloaded them to the computer into Sonar using an Alesis IO26. Then I added a solo through an EDIROL UA101 direct to Sonar. Mixed on the computer (now at home on Sonar 6 le).

Feel free to constructively criticize anything posted on this board. I think it's fair to point out the good and the bad in any project as it both educates and encourages...

I agree, and I've addressed this above - the dragging is precipitated by the primitive piano technique. :D ....
The drums are midi - that's all I have right now - and I agree they're no comparison to live drums. I'm hoping to have a friend record live drums for me in the near future. He's about 12 hour drive away, but will email files. He's going to check out what his nearby friend has for software...

There is an abundance of constructive criticism in MP3 posts if you take a look through some of the threads here. That's how most of us grow in our skills. We welcome any and all comments but again, (unless it is MYHATBROKE lol) you should be able to find some creativity or performance worth complimenting.

I am soooooo tempted to say "send me the mix without the drums" and track them for you. I recentl started recording again and my set is all setup and mic'ed and ready to hit the red button but I have so much on my plate right now. I have 13 new songs and a new band and I am recording us and I am now on guitar. Your stuff would shine more with a real drum track and I am actually really happy with my drums sound now. If I could get my "band" drummer to stop playing so freaking awesome without making stupid mistakes I would be ok. (tempo out of fills, stick hits etc. ahhhh) Sorry, did not mean to make this about me. Track some real drums to this and repost, I would love to hear.

You sound busy - looking forward to hearing some of your recordings when you get a chance...:D

Very cool Gerry. No nits from me (new montiors/room, trying to get more comfy here first) . Guitar sounds great. Vocals are smooth and well delivered as usual. Great song man. Very relaxing.

Take care

Gary

Thanks Gary - congrats on the new monitors. I know I enjoy mixing on mine compared to what I had before.....

And another mix done and uploaded as promised:
- added a pad to fill in the rhythm (keyboards)
- redid the solo on my EC Strat, mic'd on my Marshall
- brought up the bass some more; just wasn't getting enough :)

Hope you'll take the time to listen and let me know how it sounds...

Ido,
I seem to have some trouble with this link: it initiates a download & not the streamer - then WMP attempted to play the download but couldn't read it due to an extensiion issue. I'll go back to the previous link.
Cheers
ray

Thanks Ray! I remixed this morning... Mike and I noticed some high end on the organ that was a little annoying - like a whistle. And it seemd to come from just the G Chord so not sure what's up with that. Anyway I eq'd a bit then reloaded the song on SoundClick. It took out the whistle but kept the bulk of the organ intact. :)

Cool song..really like the tone on the guitar solo...very smooth ! Mix sounds well balanced and clean...nice job!

The pad and bass really stand out this time around. It's a significant improvement, really adds a fuller dimension to the song. Solo also sounds real smooth. Sounds great man. Take Care

Thanks Gary and Queepy - improvements are direct result of the great feedback I receive from the listeners on this board so my thanks go out to them also! :)
