Anyone please give me advice for a new snare(wood). And what heads,snare strings you like.

I am looking a the Anton Fig signature snare. It is a 14" diam and like 6" deep if I remember right. I am pretty sure it is a maple shell.Cost is around $399.00. I jammed on one the other day at the all evil G.C. and the drum has a real good rock punch to it. Also has a wood rim.
I had been a Remo Weather King fan for years but I recently picked up a Evans batter head that I am thinking of using from now on. I can't remember the exact name of it but the head has tiny air holes around the edges and also has a built in muffle ring. The ring does not muffle enough by itself but I only stick on one gel muffler on the head and sounds great.

Snare Drum
The Anton Fig snare is a good rock & roll snare. The 6" depth gives a deep sound and the wood rims create very warm rim shots. However, it would not be my first choice for funk or jazz gigs. Evans makes a few snare batter heads with vents - the Uno 58 and the Genera dry are single ply (better for snare). They also make a couple of 2 ply with vents. The vents allow air to escape which eliminates alot of ring. I used Remo coated Ambassadors for years and then went to the Uno 58. For a long time Evans heads suffered from lack of quality, but since D'Addario took over there seems to be a significant improvement

Hi Snapper, My reccomendation as a drummer and (pseudo)engineer, would be to check out the line of Pork Pie snare drums if you have a Guitar Center(eeek) close by. A few friends of mine are endorsed by the company and they swear that the company won't sell a bad drum (reguardless of where it's sold from). I own 2 of them and the thing I like is that you can get a TON of different sounds from them. If you want something that really cuts though like the newer rock/metal sound, you just crank it up and believe me it CUTS. If you want a simple rock sound, just add a little tape to kill some of the ring and it sounds great. I think the 6X12's are around $400 at Guitar Center (maybe even less if you talk em down). Bill Detamore (Pork Pie founder/Drummaker) is a true craftsman. If I was going to have someone else build me a set of Drums, or a snare-it would have to be a coin toss between Detamore and Detamore! hahahaha
The Drums rock-but they are not cheap, but then again, you're talking about a handcrafted instrument.
I personally would build it myself. I built my own drumkit, and for the price of an Economy set, you can get excellent quality.

Depends alot on what you want the thing to sound like. I would assume you want a fat sound, asking about a deep snare. I prefer a deeper snare and would suggest you check out the hardware first. Make sure you can adjust tension and height from both sides. Ive seen alot of people having problems with ringing and buzzing just because they didnt have enough adjustment. I use a frosted single ply with a black dot inside. It works for me but then again I'm not hard to please and I have plenty of adjustment knobs and levers on mine.

Where did you order you shells and hard ware from I know I saw it in here someplace but cant find it. I like the idea of building my own. I play an old premier resonator series set and they dont make anything to match it any more. I woulkd love to add an 18" floor tom on my left side (just to be different)

I bought all the parts through Drum Supply House.
Andy's really easy to work with.
He did a good job for me-the kick drums took awhile, because it was a completely custom Order (Keller didn't have any 28" shells in stock, so they literally had to build my kicks for me.

I'd like to see what all this pork pie business is about but there is no guitar center near me and I havent seen any around. Are there any online stores carrying them before I scour the net. I think I'll look up their website.
