adesk to have two computer moniters inserted in table so the screens look up at you like a tv broadcaster's desk.Or any tried and true desk plans that work well?
Open to any suggestions. Also wondering if moniters could produce a bad effect if sitting below speakers.
And also hello to all!!!:-)

Hey Darr, Check out this link for the desk i just purchased. I got it at Lowes for $149 closeout price. I beleive it retails for $199. THis work great for my application. It is nice and sturdy, has wheels and the shelves are nice and wide.

Hope this helps.

Something I forgot to add. I was able to put it together myself and it only took a couple of hours.

JC,Can you believe.......

I have one of these as well.It was tough trying to get two 17inch moniters on this and then speakers? No.So I moved the shelves out on the sides abit more and put the speakers on those.Works ok.I was just thinking of something where I could put a mixer on this as well or such. All on one table.
I will have to rethink that stand.Maybe I could adapt it over.JC thanx for the great feedback,I appreciate it!!

That's pretty amazing

One other thought I just had after reading your post, I remember reading an artical in "Recording" mag a few months ago about building a workstation. I do not remember what month it was in, but they way they designed it was that you could make the width to suite your needs. Hope this helps.

Happy Recording

WOW.Damn I wish I would have kept that subscrip.

If any one has that article or any idea's about that would be great.Jc got a scanner???hahaha
Thanx for the tip I will see if I can search this out.

I am building my own console desk. I went to home depot and bought (2) six foot mitred kitchen countertops (to form an L-Shape)finished with a nice gray laminate (Mystique). I think $85 total. For legs i bought some threaded steel pipe and flanges cut to 28" working height. I also will be using two monitors so i will be building a riser in the corner. They sell the same laminate in sheets so you can match the riser to the desk. You could also laminate any rackmount stands you have. Should look sharp. Will post pictures when complete. A lot cheaper than the middle atlantic stuff.

i can relate to this one. We aren't going to build a desk straight out per se. we are going to experiment first with a few sheets of ply and work out how we need to set this baby up. All has changed with this computer thing. we are looking at dual monitors though, perhaps even dual computers.

I built a unit for a corner desk I have.
You can see it here:
http://greysfiles.com/Studio/Pages/Jones.htm
Its the 3rd picture down.

Each of the "wings" houses a 6 unit rack. The tops of the side wings double as stands for the audio monitors.

Then on top of the whole unit rests the video monitor. There's definately room for 2 monitors there, and I plan to add one very soon.

Just below the video monitor is a shelf for the CPU (its hard to make it out in the picture)

On the desk top itself rests my mixer, and I have a pull-out tray for the keyboard.

I drew these plans up for this unit using AutoCad. Maybe if I sent John a "DXF" file he could convert it to a simpler graphic and make it available to everyone?
What do you think John? (I know your busy with your own studio right now.....)

Go for it Michael - I've got autocad so I'll be able to turn it into a jpeg and post it on your site.

Incidently - those of you who have seen Michaels setup note how he uses the corner of the room to setup in. It gives you a good shape because your side walls a fanned away from you therefeore eliminating the side reflections you would get if you set up along a typical wall.

corner unit

I know this thread died a while back...but if possible, could you please email the JPG of the desk unit decribed. I am in this exact stage....where buying a unit is costly and still won't meet my needs. I would prefer to build it.

Thanks in advance...Geoff (hotwheels@entermail.net)

Hey, you bet!
I'll do it first thing in the morning. I have the autocad file on my PC at work.

I built mine out of a couple of sheets of 3/4" plywood. It works well for me.

Nice rat

Nice looking too Track Rat. What did you use to make the structure strong...er...how did you attach the 3/4 ply to each other? Also, what are those legs on the bottom?

(sorry if I cross posted this somehow)

Basicly I just used inch and half drywall screws right into the plywood (no cleats). The whole thing sets on three "boxs" that are equipment racks for 19" gear (except the center one which is wider and now conceals my computer which really cuts down the noise from the fans and hard drives). The boxs are all on wheels so I can roll it around, like to get behind it for maintainence. The bridge accross the back is great for setting the computer monitor and nearfields on and it's hinged for access to the wiring harness that connects everything to the patchbays.
