Looking for some initial feedback on the bottom end of this mix. If you've got subs and would be so kind, I'm interested in how the kick, bass and sub are working on the falls.
I know the vocals are loose and need work, and the guitars and strings need to be retracked...
With and without mastering suite, because I want to know if I'm heading in the right direction with that, too. I'm just pushing EQ a little and keeping the red lights off (three points in the "without" version).
Thanks everybody!
Okay, I took the songs off Soundcloud, so the new mix is at THIS THREAD.

I wish I had a sub. My monitors go down to 30 some Hz. Sounds good to me. Nice and deep.

I don't use a sub (sorry), but I'd be happy to comment from a, listening through reasonably good quality headphones perspective if you'd like?

IBB: Thanks! That's kind of what I get. My HD380s actually sound really good doing the sub thing...odd for cans.

Heat: Always glad to have your input! Shoot it out.

General: I've noticed that it's really hard to get any volume when you're running a fat bottom (careful how you read that). I've got a second mix running already with a 30Hz 12dB/octave high pass so I can actually get a little more out of the limiter...
After I get the vocals and guitars retracked I'll post it up. Probably Monday.

Well, the bass certainly is deep. I holds together fairly well through my HD280's though, which do have pretty good bass reproduction imo.

Vocals don't sound rough to me, but then I may have a different standard for roughness. lol

The whole mix sounds a little too scooped to me though. Like, not enough mids...lots of deep bass and high cymbal content, perhaps dominating vs. the vocals and guitars a bit. Just my overall impression. Perhaps a taste thing more than anything.

I always get a Kansas vibe from your vocals and melodies for some reason. Hope that isn't off putting to you.

Oh, I listened to the unmastered version...

Thanks Heat! The unmastered is too scooped...that's bad, because the mastered has more scoop! :(
I liked Kansas a lot when John (Elefante) sang with them, not so much before that or after. Still listen to John with Mastodon and solo stuff. But no way I figure I sound like him.

The main thing I was looking for was the solidity of the three bass bits. 10's (low passed at 600) 18 (high passed at 1000) and sub (which is actually a separate synth part that's an octave below). Was hoping they all played nice together and glad to hear they are. Maybe just a bit less of that bus (all three together) would help the bottom and give me so more headroom. I'll look at the top end as well.

Definitely a Kansas sound to the overall song, I like the acoustic sound except its got no high end at all, whereas the vocal sounds very high-passed it might be the reverb choice). The cymbals are hissy - the trailoff of them, again it might be reverb.
No subs here, so the bass could come up a bit.

The kick might be able to come down just a very slight touch. Or maybe just the click can come down on the kick because I'm not getting punched in the chest by the low end, but the click is fairly loud.

Bass is all low-end rumble. I can't really detect what its doing other than rumbling. There is some muddy lo-mid frequency that pops in every once in a while on the bass but I can't pick out what the notes or phrasing are.

I'm about to relocate my sub in my room because it's pretty wonky sounding. But at least I'm familiar with its wonkiness...

Woh. I don't have subs, but my headphones were rumbling!

Makes me wonder what's going on down there...

Okay! Exactly what I was hoping to get. Systems that don't go sub 40 are lacking in bass, but subs are too full. My (and IBB's ) systems that go low without subs sound fine. Okay, I'll put more of the 18" in and less of the rumble. Should have another mix up tomorrow. :)

Thanks for all the input!

Mike! The acoustic was recorded, the track was lost, found, unable to save, bounced, reclaimed...I'm going to retrack the two acoustic tracks. Something went wrong in the process of losing the drive the song was stored on...
I noticed the vocal and cymbal problem as well. The reverb I picked is also on the guitars, but we shall see. I do have a 200Hz HP on the vocal so that could be part of the problem. I've already cut the highs on the cymbals. Wait for the next mix. :)
Tad. Yeah, with all the bass going on the kick is getting lost (even though the bass bus is ducked off the kick signal) Gotta work on that, maybe a longer release on the sidechain....
I'll probably put the next mix in a new post with a different subject since this subject title seems to only attract sub responses...wonder how that could be?
