Uh, I use Cool Edit Pro as my recording and editing software. Is that the same thing as the .cep files you mention?
Okay, I reinstalled Win 98, and the stuttering problem has about 95% disappeared.
I'm going to pursue this, though, using ideas from this thread. I'll work the buffers for and while a report back.

speaking of plug-ins, when i installed an old win2k plugin on XP it caused my systems boot time to run 20-30sec longer...
M$ just sucks, plain and simple...
yes i config the applaction to run as an older program, made no difference... billy boy needs his arse kicked very hard for selling such a screwed up piece of crap OS... IMHO
and all in the name of money, oh yeah, that makes it ok then, yeah right...
