stupid waveform question

When I record a audio track in Sonar. Whether I have it set to mono or stereo, I only get one waveform. The top waveform remains a straight line. Shouldnt they both be waveforms in the same track when stereo? thanks

how are you recording? what do you use for your interface?

the reason I ask is that I can select as my input either a stereo or mono source and I think that it's possible that you may have selected a mono source even though you are recording to a stereo track

I have tascam 1082. I see any adjustment on board or in control panel that would stick me to one or the other?
 
I've just re-read your top post... I missed the bit about the top waveform being flat.

Are you sure you've got a signal going to that particular connection... I'm looking at the Tascam site (nice looking device BTW) but I'm struggling really. Any chance of some screenshots of your Sonar track settings?
 
Let me know if this shot got through. Notice the top 3 tracks have a flat top line. I set the left side for mono and stereo. Seems not to make a difference.
Yea, the board is nice. Can't really compare it to others for its all I ever used.
Some faders rattles when used though. strange, may need a tweaking. Only 3 months old. thanks for any ideas.
 
hmmm, Are you actually recording a stereo signal when recording a stereo track? If you are recording a mono source to a stereo track, one of the waveforms will be flat. Just stick with recording mono tracks for mono signals.
 
oh, good question. Those tracks were from actual guitar, bass and electric roland drum kit. Are they considered a mono source?

Did you plug them in with only one cable? If you did, it's a mono source. Mono means one. Stereo (kind of) means two. A bass guitar is a mono instrument, a drumset is a stereo one.

I was just about to ask the same question myself... certainly looks like an input problem with the worse case being something wrong with the Tascam... but it may your source, as Farview said...
 
I doubt there is anything wrong with the tascam. You need to know how to route the signal through the tascam AND how to route the signal from the tascam to the track you are trying to record to. You will need to consult both manuals for that.
 
I see. I'll read into that. Seems though the Bass and Guitar are Mono no matter what. But my midi drums comes in mono. I will try to work that through board in stereo. thanks
