STupid SB live, need help on recording

Ahh i need help please! i took my brothers SB live cause my SB 128 really sucked... I was told that it was suppose to hook up my mic preamp to the line-in instead of the mic-in.. so i did that, but den theres no sound when I record ( barely audible sound atleast), am I doing something wrong? is there suppose to be some kind of setting i am suppose to setup? I set the gain on my Behringer MIC100 preamp to 40 something with the output at 10+

PS: Also when i plug it in to the mic-in, I have to set the mic volume really high with the the 20+ boost in windows so i can get a decent volume coming out of the mic. Is that normal?

You were right in hooking your preamp to the line in's.

Try hooking up a cheap computer mic to you mic in. If that fixes you problem is in your preamp.

Try hooking up your preamp to your home stereo. If that fixes your problem it's your computer.

If you can get sound out of your home stereo and out of a cheap mic then it **should** work.

It's a matter of fiddling with it.

Does anyone else have ideas?

OK i just hooked up my cheap mic to my mic-in and my cheap mic sounds better den my STudio projects hooked up to my preamp.... could it be the cable i am using? cause its a 1/4 inch on both ends with a 1/8inch converter on the side connecting to my sidecard, could that be the problem? Because the converter is a mono one tihink and only picks up the left channell. Could it have anything to do with unbalanced Ts connector or Balanceced TRS connector? can someone shed some light on this for me? I am really mad right now because i spent all my money on this condensor mic and preamp and its ounds worse den my 2 dollar computer mic!! WAHHHHHHH

why don't you just plug a pair of headphones in the preamp's output and check if it's clean.

if it's clean it's you soundcard or computer or what ever but not the mic or the preamp.

if it's still fucked then take the mic to a friend and try it there. if you don't have any friends then take it to a shop and try it there.

your mic might be fucked.

i'm pretty sure it's not the cables.

Ok.. Something is defenitly wrong here.
Firsty of all, you should get a cable that has a stereo 1/8" plug on one end, and splits into two 1"4" mono plugs. Since these are almost impossible to find, try and get a 1/8" stereo to 2 RCA, and use RCA-1"4" adpators. That should take care of the cable issue.
As for testing the pre-amp - if you can't plug it into your home stereo (RCA cable with 1/4" adaptors, again), tke a pair of headphones, and plug it into the pre-amp's line output. If you can't hear the mic with the headphones, something is wrong with either the mic or the pre-amp.

Also, re-check your windows mixer, and see if your line input is selected for recording, and that the levels are right. I know this sounds trivial, but most annoying problems are, and we just need someone to remind us of all the trivial things we forgot...

Oh yeah first recording!

this is with a sound blaster live, Behringer MIC100 preamp and a studio project B1 condencor! so cheap!
