This is stupid, but I have very little clue as to what a sampler does. Ah well, I'm a newbie, and its my job to be clueless.

Basically it records sounds and gives you tools for editing them into sound sets that are then played as a MIDI instrument.

Hello.
Ever heard about Amon Tobin? This guy records on Ninja Tune Records. He doesn't play any instruments.
What he does (like so many others) is get some sounds out of old vinyl records and put them through his sampler. Then he modifies these sounds with filters until he gets what he wants and then, with a sequencer, he makes amazing songs.
