Studio Terminology

I'm not sure where to post this question, there isn't really a forum for this.

I feel there needs to be a new category for studio designations.

There are project studios, music studios, production studios, mastering studios, and post production studios. My studio falls in between a project studio and a music studio. It's not bare bones like a project studio, but it's not professionally designed like a music studio. I've been leaning towards either "Boutique Studio" or "Journeyman Studio' as a description.

What do you guys think? Suggestions?

I like the term - Boutique. It implies a certain intimate yet upper scale environment. But you'll have to ban beer and cigarettes in favor of cognac and fine cigars.

My little "project studio" probably falls in the category of Journeyman Studio, both from an appropriate discription of me and my approach and more importantly it reflects the "blue collar" clients I seem to draw from (more the cigarette and beer crowd - for sure)

Tweaker toys

an "alternative" studio? Hell, I dunno...
I refer to my entire meager setup as my Tweaker toys.
Smoke and tweak. Smoke and tweak. Smoke and tweak. Hours and hours and hours and hours.....
Seriously though, theres a word I've been trying to pinpoint that would describe this kind of studio, but my brain won't let me at it... its already driving me nuts.... I'm gonna get out a thesaurus and see if I can find it....

Interesting subject. As for my humble rig, I think Jouneyman Studio applies best. Not fully pro as you discribed but not a total shmuck. Journeyman....yea....I like the sound of that....

Total shmuck for me.....:D

"Shmuck Studios".....it has a certain ring to it don't you think?.....

On meth or speed? (tweaker)

I like to refer to mine as a "Music Compositional Studio"!.
I compose, write, arrange and record my own music complete with a vocal booth, instruments and recording gear.

Tom has aroused some great thinking here...

The term "home studio" makes no sense in a sense of categorization , cause my studio is at home, yet it is of Pro quality and is run as a business.....The term "home studio" implies that it is just a 4 track in a little bedroom, or something.... Here are my recomendations for categorizing studio's....

Beginner Studio.

Project Studio.

Semi-Pro Studio.

Proffesional Studio.

World-Class Proffesional Studio.

Joe

Hmmm, ok how about;

2nd Generation Studio

Compact Studio

Mini Studio

Personal Studio

Cheap Ass Studio

Financially optimal Studio

Money Sucking Pit of Poverty Studio

:D

How about just 'studio' and let the user decide what to call it?

Dammit, Vox, what *is* that avatar of yours?

Right on...

Great responses everybody.

Voxvendor, I was using "Semi-Pro" as a designation but it lacks romance and cache'. When people ask what kind of studio I have, I need a term that is accurate but not coldly clinical, know what I mean?

MisterQcue, no offense, but "Music Compositional Studio" sounds a little unwieldy and confusing. I would be forever explaining it to my clients.

Buck62, "Home-Pro" is accurate but not glamorous.

A big part of the studio experience for first time clients is the "experience" and "atmosphere" of the studio. In addition to your skills, this "experience" and "atmosphere" is what makes them come back. In professionally designed Music Studios this is also a big part of their appeal. Even if the client gets stuck way back in studio C, he could use studio A if he could pony up the cash. He SAW studio A on the way in, if you know what I mean. Anyway, part of the whole feel of a studio is what the client can tell his friends. "I'm recording at a Semi-Pro-Home-Pro-Music-Compositional-Studio" isn't ringing my bell :)

Keep the ideas coming guys.

dobro,

I believe Vox's avatar is a dinasour with some sort of creature in it's mouth......I had to stare at it a while to finally see what it was too.....

Boutique sounds good

How about this?

Average studio

MidStudio

Sexy Studio (is not "pornographic" but is on its way...)

Cool Studio (not bad, not hughe, not imperialist)

Oh Gawd...

Regebro, my studio is definitely CRAMMED!

Voxvendor, the designation "music studio" is not my invention. This is what I have always heard and used to describe professionally designed studios that are primarily used to record bands, orchestras, etc. If you've used/heard different nomenclature, clue me in man!

And now you are under my power HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!

OK, OK, after I spent about an hour trying to figure out how to shrink an animated GIF, I gave up and just grabbed this picture of a T Rex eating a cartoon guy, cropped it to size and slapped it on because I was fed up. I haven't bothered to go looking for cool GIFs again yet.
