Ive been browsing through old threads...and there seems to be a lot of hype about Studio Projects mics......

any particular reasons??

Ive never heard of these mics until now and im quite curious to find out what so good about them.

Im currently thinking of getting a Rode NTK, NT2 or ADK 5.1 but im open to suggestions...and im wondering if a Studio Projects mic might suit my needs....

** Ill be using it to record drum overhead, acoustic and tenor male voice

Cheers :)

est,

The Australian distributor for SP mics is Mick Wordley at; www.mixmasters.com.au .........they are in Adelaide, and Mick is quite approachable. They run a studio as well as being the importers of SP, Meek, Avalon, Coles and other higher end gear.

Contact them and see if there is a retailer in WA.

est,

Where have you been hiding? :)

The reasons for all the hype is that the SP mics sound good, and they are really inexpensive.

The C1 gotten some really nice endorsements from some heavy hitters in the recording industry. Our own resident music industry legend, and mic guru Harvey Gerst, rates it a good buy.

I have the C1 myself, and I like it a lot. Whether it will work for your particular tenor voice remains to be seen. Maybe you can get with the dealer ausrock mentioned and try one out.

i have two NTK's and two C1's. IMO the C1's are pretty good and useful in a lot of applications. I think the NTK's are smoother overall and I find more uses for them. I also consider the NTK's for overheads before the C1's. Actually I go for an NTK before the C1 most of the time...

Considering the NTK is a valve mic and the C1 isn't, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a noticable defference between them.

The NTK has a Recommended Retail (what is called "list" price in the US I think) of $1495 Aust........can be found with a buy price of $879.

The C1 has a RRP of $649 Aust..........buy price of around $599, maybe a bit less if you hunt around.

One thing I've noticed is that over here Rodes mics, all of a sudden seem to be heavily discounted at some retailers..........maybe it is a response to competition from imports.

est, just my opinion, but I would put ADK someway behind Rode or SP mics. Another alternative is to wait until the SP "B" series become readily available over here and look at them as well.

I can tell right now that If I lived in Austrailia, I would become a thief. Shit those prices are awfull.

LMAO............

Darrin,

At the moment the Currecy Exchange Rate is $1.00 US=$0.56 Aust.......that's the highest the Aust dollar has been against the greenback for quite a long time.

I looked into importing direct from the US, but unfortunately, by the time you battle the exchange rate, factor shipping, insurance and import duties into the deal, the savings in most cases aren't worth the trouble........if, on the otherhand, you know someone travelling from the US to here, then it all becomes nearly worthwhile so long as manufacturers warranties don't become an issue.

Where Rode are concerned, you guys actually are better off than us.............our Govt. "subsidises" companies that export overseas, consequently Rode apparently pay no import duty, taxes, etc., on any components (i.e; capsules, etc) they source from China IF THOSE COMPONENTS are used in items being exported. This is the explanation given by Rode's CEO for the imbalance between prices in the US and here.

thanks guys.

yes we have to spend our aussie paseos very carefully!!

Its a pity i cant test out the C1 and the NTK so as to see which one suits best......plus the money factor plays a part in the decision making process....

how does the NT2 stack up against the C1?

Hey guys.
Im a perthite as well, and I just ordered a Studio Projects B1. they are retailing for 349 here... so for 79 US plus shipping, it should run me hopefully around 200 bucks. Ive ordered a few things across the net before, and haven't had problems yet, If I have problems I'll post them.

Ausrock, isn't it really bad that we are considering 56 cents to the dollar as being good... a few years back it was in the mid 70's and classified as low...

as for the Rode Mics, I haven't tried the NT2 or NTK, but I have a pair of NT3's that I absolutely love. excellent for overhead, acoustic guitars, cabinets and location sound recording(with that oh so handy 9V battery supply...

Dr,

Yeah, we can blame Keating for the dollar value.

As for the import thing, a lot depends on the method of shipping from the US. From memory a few months back, one of the US guys sent a couple of mics to Dobro in Singapore and if I recall, the shipping was $60 approx, and they arrived within the week.

You should get a buy price on the B1 of around $280 Aust., from retailers here as it's almost an "industry standard" to discount around 20% off recommended retail. Compare that to; $79 US = $155 Aust (approx), add on freight $60 US = $115 Aust and you have $270 Aust...........with no easy warranty cover.

I know where I would spend my money;)

the shipping was quoted to me at 12 - 25 US...
the last time I ordered DVDs from amazon shipping was 30 bucks, and that package should be the same size/ weight...
