Maybe the guy actually has a point to make.
maybe so--but i haven't really seen it, though. outside of "SP gear sucks" that is.....which is, of course, subjective on many levels.
i'd love to hear something he's recorded (or played on, or whatever). i've posted a number of tunes in the mp3 clinic--and it's not uncool to post my stuff. i've even gotten permission to post other folks stuff i've recorded (and have done so).
personally, i have a hard time believing that much gear *truly* sucks. or maybe all of it at that level sucks and some people manage to "rise above it" and make great recordings with crappy gear. i can only trust my ears.
sure i don't use my SP gear much anymore--and i can totally identify with the "pull it out of the mothballs" comment. but that's not to say that some folks aren't making some killer recordings with little more than a VTB1 and some SP mics--b/c they are.
IMO, to tell someone who writes kickass songs that their $100 preamp and $80 mic aren't going to "do the job well enough" MAY be selling them short. i'd rather see someone recording (even with cheap gear) and getting their ideas down and out there, than not ever doing it b/c they're discouraged because some faceless names on some stupid forum told em not to bother unless they invest at least $5K in their setup.
so again i ask.....is it truly the gear that sucks? or is it the skills (or lack thereof) behind the gear either on the performing or engineering side that suck (or don't suck)?
it's all tools folks.....the point is......RECORD.
cheers,
