Studio Projects VTB-1?

My goodness! Where is the freakin love "recordingpro"?? I'm sorry but everybody doesn't have the money to buy high end mics and preamps and all that. I know how to get a good sound out of my "chinese crap". The only difference between you and me is i have to work harder to get a good sound. If i had the luxury of having all that high end stuff i still wouldn't be arrogant about it like you are being. I respect folks with all kinds of gear because we are all striving to get a good sound. Also, it's not all about the gear. I hear plenty of music on the radio today that is nothing more than high end studio quality mastered and polished crap. Alot of it wouldn't sound any worse if it was ran through a $1000 preamp with burr brown doo doo chips. It's all about the music!!! I'd rather hear more high end music than high end preamps. Change your attitude man!!!! AHHHHHH! I feel much better now. Welcome to the forums man! :D

Alright wise guy. What studio gear should everybody have if no-one should have "chinese crap"? I want exacts. Preamp, mic, recording interface(analog/digital), monitors, etc. Tell me what the perfect proffesional studio is! I'm really curious to hear what kinda mess you come up with.
 
what's your budget? what style of music? what are we recording? drums? guitar? vox? clavinet? b3?
What's the room like? is it a bedroom closet or a cathedral?

I don't own a studio - I work in various studios - I do own some gear and a bunch of mics that i take with me to studios though and I can track some stuff at my house - I just don't have enough room for bands at home so why bother

I've got about 5 p4 3.0ghz for running orchestration and about 8 or 9 p4 2.66ghz (the 2.66ghz are getting phased out for more power) with too much software and plugs to list - they also serve as a mini rendering farm

I've got a pair of bottles with all the caps - a couple of u87 - a cactus - baby bottles - rode stuff k2, ntk - the studio project mics (c1,b1) :eek: 4 groove tubes mics gt44 and gt33 and too many other mics to write

pres - some robbies - 1073 - portico

and the list goes on.......
 
I really want to like my VTB-1, but I haven't had great luck with it either. I haven't tried it on everything yet though.

It's ok to be honest - no matter what goobers like "studiomaster" say - or should I say "studiomasturbater" - he's obviously been doing that so long he's gone blind

PS : the shoes are New Balance, made in the U.S.A.

Sounds like a lot of great gear. How about posting a few photos so that some of us po' folk can see what the good stuff looks like? Also, how about posting a link to some of your recordings?

no offense intended, but it's generally pretty bad form to come onto a forum more or less intended for budget-minded (read: low end) home-recording folks, call their gear a bunch of crap and then when asked to help "show them the way" by posting some of your self-admittedly superior results, get all shitty about it and refuse to do so. i'm sure a LOT of folks here would appreciate hearing what "home recordings" made on "far superior" gear sound like.

although, if you spend a little time in the mp3 mixing clinic, you'll see that there are a LOT of folks making FANTASTIC music using some really cheap, low-end gear....in fact, some of the gear is so low-end that it makes a mackie and an adat look high-end. :D

i too thought my SP gear was excellent when i first started out....and since my gear has gotten better, i can absolutely see the limitations in it--i think anyone with some experience can.

but regardless, the B1 is still a very usable mic (at least as much as the sm57), and the VTB1 is a solid, cheap preamp for someone looking to amplify a mic signal. both pieces of gear are considerably better than most of their respectively priced competitors--and marketing practices aside, SP's customer support is really damn good.

certainly the VTB1's not as good as a portico, but then again at 10% of the price of a great deal on a used portico (nevermind the $1400 new price), who really expects it to be? and is the quality you get from a portico 1200% better than the VTB1 to account for the difference in cost? maybe....but probably not for the majority of folks here. and i don't think you'll ever find someone who'll say they'd rather have the VTB1 than the portico.


so the real question here is.....do you think someone who's interested in home recording should wait until they've got several thousand dollars to throw at a portico and a U87 (as well as room treatment) before they start recording? or should they not even bother?

I don't see anything wrong with what Recordingpro posted at all.

I just think that a lot of you guys are internalizing what he said, and are taking it way too seriously.

You guys act like he insulted all of your Mamas, when all he did was say he didn't like a particular piece of recording gear. Whoooo. Now all of your pussies are hurting, because you think it was some sort of direct insult to all of you, personally.

Maybe instead of getting all huffy, you could take some of the good comments as well as some of the bad comments, and maybe learn something. Maybe the guy actually has a point to make.
