Vikki! Great to have another Brit on here. Have you heard the news today that the government wants us to take 1/2hrs exercise a day? But I don't keep my car that far away from my house!
I have joined in by walking to the pub, but the walk back with 5 pints of Holdens best inside of me is a bit of a shitter.

Ausrock why do you hate the NT3 so much?
Just interested no critisism intended.

LMAO..............I don't hate the NT3's, it's just that I have yet to hear one that doesn't impart an irritating, abrasive brightness to the original sound and that description is conservative. :)

Thats what I thought you would say, a lot of people seem to share your opinon.

I use them all the time in a local theatre as stage Mics maybe this does not show-up any nasties.

Many Many Thanks for all your advice and information. I was just looking around the net and i see there's a guy in the uk who makes valve mics and even builds the capsule. I would imagine they're quite expensive "Andy Lawrence Mics" i wonder if he will sell me a capsule!
I use a beyer dynamic tgx series for live vocal use and it does produce a nice warm sound that seems to suit my voice, i wondered if it was worth having a look into the Beyer condensors, anyone use these for recording, any advice on model
Thanks Once Again .....i'll post a sound file when i finally get sorted out!
Keep any suggestions coming.

The Rode NT3 can also sound great on bass amps with a small 10" speaker. ;)

Hey Vikki

I was the first person to hip people to the existence of the Andy Lawrence mics (after reading about them in a mic shoot out article in Guitar Magazine). At the time (December 2001) he charged around £440 for a tube mic (Type B: cardioid only), and about half that for the FET version (Type A: also cardioid only).

I'd actually like to hear from anyone who's bought one. What are your impressions? How did you find dealing with Andy? I've spoken with him on the phone and he seems like a jolly nice (and knowledgable) chap.

I can't find much info on the Andy Lawrence mics, a shame really could be a good product.

Thanks Mark
I've seen that one, i thought there were more pages there at one time, thats the only thing i can find.
Vikki

Well, there's his number on there if you want to give him a call ;)

I'll give him a try next week and see if i can find more info.

A couple of observations and/or suggestions................

I tried to find their review in "Guitar Magazine" online but Google came up with nothing obvious.....almost as though that mag doesn't exist.

For someone supposedly building boutique mics they sure have a bland webpage with stuff all information.

If you contact them I would ask if you could see their capsule/mic manufacturing facilities, particularly if you are considering laying down cold hard cash. If they are hesitant or evasive I would be very suspicious of their claims...........there have been numerous scams where people have tried to pass off Asian source parts and/or mics as something they're not.

Caveat emptor.

Hmmm
Should be like a real super doopa lab i guess, especially the"Gold Vacuum Evaporated Melonex Membrane" or can you buy those bits in? I think i'll play safe and buy an Audio Technica or something similar.

I'm just suggesting caution.

When I saw the mic on their webpage, my first thought was that the capsule or what was visible of it and it's mounting post through the mesh, at first glance could have been mistaken for any number of Asian capsules..........admittedly you can't make out details but what little I did see made me look twice but there could be genuine explanations, and yes you can buy capsules, etc.

BTW, are you into DIY electronics?

Vikki,
Here's another site to try with lots of samples: Microphone Test. It's already been posted in a recent thread or two, but I just wanted to be sure you'd seen it.

I was really impressed with the ADK A-48 on acoustic guitar. It's a bit bright for my taste, but nothing a little EQ or repositioning won't cure. The thing I like about it is the "space" it seems to put around the instrument that makes it sound more real or 3-dimensional. Most of the other mics sound more 2-dimensional on the guitar.

And while I’m on the “3-D” subject, that is one of the biggest differences I hear between high-end LDCs like Neumann and the Oriental wannabes. I notice it most on acoustic instruments and it may have to do with the Neumanns, etc…having a much superior off-axis response, thus making them more accurate at picking up the nuances around the instrument as well as the instrument itself. That’s my guess, anyway.

Thanks Ausroc and Flatpicker.
Thanks for the link to the mic tests i'll have a listen at them all tonight. I notice a few months ago a guy did a mic test on the Lakewood guitar forum and he liked the AT 4033 over some of the Neumanns.
Ausroc, yep we built the Calrec eq off the Gyraf audio site, and the results are superb. I had a little factory etch me the pcb's and got all the bits and built it up, what helps i suppose is my dads an electronics engineer and i've seen him built projects over the years. He put me right with my mistakes and drilled me the case which was a surplus one, put it together for about 100 uk pounds, great unit.
We may have a go at building the g7 valve mic off the same site a bit later on, will have to dig around for a Capsule. But i was after something in the meantime to get up and recording with.
Thanks Again

Except he spells it Membrain :D

O.K
You'd shoot me if you knew i was an English teacher!
We'll put it down to branestorm.... sorry brainstorm.

I thought you may have been the same Vikki that frequented Tech Talk. Perki did a small group buy in of Soundking capsules a while back and I managed to get two of those. BTW F/picker, don't forget tube mic schematics if you come across any:D ..........God knows when I'm going to have time to play with DIY but it will happen sooner or later.
