Have you visited the to The Listening Sessions I posted about in the above thread? There's a nice mp3 clip of it there in Session 5. You can hear it for yourself and compare it to a bunch of other LDC mics (including the NT3! :p ).

FWIW, I saved them all to my hard drive and renamed them so I know which is which. Now all I have to do is play the "folder" with Winamp and just choose between them for a quick comparision.

Thanks Flatpicker
Great site that, i think i like the sound of the SE Z5600 although i believe they do another dual valve version called the Gemini, that is supposed to give an even more detailed sound.
Thanks

I think SE is doing a seven day try before you buy on the mics, I might have to check out that Z5600 myself I don't have a tube mic. See if you can catch a clip of an AT3035 for guitar

vikki--

let's back up a second. are you going to be recording solo acoustic guitar? steel string? classical? or, is this mic for acoustic guitar as an instrument in a song? and, by the way, what's your budget?

Hi

I guess i was getting a bit greedy and trying to find something that would do it all, but i know it doesn't exist. Steel string fingerstyle is my first love and i was hoping eventually to make a c.d along those lines. I also have some tracks to put acoustic guitar on, along the lines of Alison Krauss and some Crystal Gayle type of material. A mic that would do vocals along them lines would be great too. I know i'm not going to get it all out of one mic so i think its a matter of something that will work well on steel acoustic guitar first. I did ponder on going for a Neumann TL103 or a pair of km184, but i've got to admit i like the sound of the SE Z5600 on the listening room recordings, it seems to have a highish mid peak that gives the acoustic guitar a more defined sound. Am i thinking along the right lines here or have i completely gone off the rails?

Any comparitive sound files while indicative of how one mic sounds opposed to another, is realistically, only relevant to that specific sound source in that specific recording situation.

There is absolutely no guarantee that with your guitar in your recording space that you would hear the same results from the mics used in the Listening Sessions.

The best thing you can do is find sources for any eligible mic that will either let you hire before you buy or will let you return the mics if they are not suitable.

Thanks
i realize theres many factors that affect the sound of the recordings, in the uk it seems you pays your money and takes your chance. Its not a very customer friendly country, its take it or leave it with some exceptions. The Calrec EQ is a great tool to gently sculp a sound, so if i don't get it too wrong i should be able to try and do something with it.
I notice the Avalon u5 seems to work very well on acoustic guitar, i may go for one of those later.
Thanks

Vikki! Great to have another Brit on here. Have you heard the news today that the government wants us to take 1/2hrs exercise a day? But I don't keep my car that far away from my house!

Anyway, mics. Here are the sites you need to know about if you're escaping the mainstream of Academy of Sound and Sound Control:

www.dv247.com
http://www.sub.co.uk

Both carry SP mics. If you go into AOS and ask about SP they'll not have a clue what you're on about, and recommend you something else rubbish.

Mark's right that the SE1 (I think it's called) looks a decent one in that range. Digital Village carries the Oktava but it's not so great value at our UK prices. Studio Projects have very good prices compared to the markup most other imports get, so £219 +P&P for a pair of C4s with the extra heads, shockmounts and flight case seems a cracking buy to me.

If you decide on something else, make sure you check these websites for prices and then get AOS to do it at that price for you - don't mention that you got them off the net of they won't do it - Digital Village have plenty of actual real stores you 'could' in theory go to.

Hope that helps!

PS - Ausrock - I see what you mean now....! (Private joke)

"Absolutely" correct. ;)

But I will add this: I've used the B3, C1, MXL 2003, MK319, and the NT3, and even though Session 5’s clips don’t sound exactly the way they did when I used them, I can still easily recognize their overall characteristics. I attribute much of this difference to the fact that Dan used a superior preamp and A/D converters and had a better room.

Lucid A to D coverters, Millenia HV3 pre amps they should all sound pretty good i guess.

I notice in the listening rooms test Sessiion 5 one of the components of the signal path is "Radar 2" sorry to sound a bit sad but can anyone tell me what Radar 2 is?
Vikki(uk)

Unless there are two different radar things around they are refering to their recording system itself.............something like Protools only regarded by many pro's to be much better.

Vikki,

If you're looking at a pair Neumann 184s and the TLM103, you're in the mid-lvel range of mics. If so, forget about the earlier posts (C4, Octava, 603s, etc.) and forget about virtually all of the mics in the Listening Session #5 (nearly all are cheap LDs). In the mid-level range for SDs, look into (in no particual order):

Microtech Gefell M300
Neumann KM 184
Josephson C42

For LDs, you might want to check out:

CAD VX2
AT 4060
Microtech Gefell M930
ADK A48

These are all very good mics, much better than the lower end ones. They are all different, but in good ways.

Good luck on your search!

what sdelsolray said but scratching the adk. :) i'm on an anti chinese mic tangent.

i also get use out of the audio-technica at4040 and blue dragonfly when tracking acoustic guitar.

i've gotten to a/b the protools hd 192 and the radar. i preferred the radar but there are other things i like better. however, converters can be just like mics and pres in that there is no best for all situations but some pretty good choices for certain vibes or sounds. i think multi converter set ups are the big thing coming on for the gear obsessed.
