I would be a little nervous about a C1 now, because of some of what's been said on here.
What has been said? Is there a quality concern, or....?

I don't get it... you've been an active hr.com memeber since 1999 with well over 500 post and never seen/read any threads on the subject?

Whats up wid dat?

Anyway... use the (*) wildcard. For example... type in... C1*

Hey Don,

Thanks for the wild card tip...

I just haven't really done that much recording up to now....but I am circling the console like a vulture ready to strike..

Watch out mofo's TAE is going to let er rip in the very near future..

as soon as I get my ass fired and have a life again ...
Just kidding...

Anyway I am getting myself positioned to start getting serious about getting the music out of my head before I'm dead...

I saw a guy selling a C1 on Craigslist with a link to a few reviews..The reviews
got me curious so I decided to see what HR.com might have to say about this sucka..

Cracks me up how opinionated we get on this very dodgy subject...

anyway here's a link to a few reviews the cat on Craigslist showed....

As a C1 user, I'm extremely happy with mine. I have a lower type voice and/or pop/folky style. You will get different opinions from everyone, some like the 4040, some prefer to save money for neumann's, but ultimately I've never read of anyone who bought one and didn't like it or return it. I don't believe it "sounds like sh*t" obviously, but even mid grade mics, depending on the voice or style, should give a reasonably good recording if done right. I love mine. YMMV.

OK first out.... I do the studio projects I control quality for the company in China the beautiful.

SECOND PART: i blew chunks on basically many C1 models micraphones for a joke.

now. you want to take chances about it? very funny. good luck hope you don't get my chunks. HOWEVER. very funny.

ALSO? alan I for serious do like it. you are fantastic OK. hey see you later man

How come no one ever asks about the Alan Smart C1 compressor on HR??? :D

Man,

With posts like these, I wonder why I spend time here.

Ok, its to hang out with some cool people and get some excellent hands on advice.

But, I learned that I can't ask anyone's opinion about a mic. They are like paint brushes. Some are better than others in certain conditions and vice versa.

Universally, I've only seen a few mics that are not worth their weight in shit. Other than that, I learned that I just have to work with a good seller who will allow me to return what I don't like. If there's a re-stocking fee that's reasonable, then its about the cost of a rental. Big whoop.

Moving on.....

Hey you're welcome... I'm glad the wildcard helped. Just for fun... you might try typing in CAD M179. Anyway, take care and best wishes on finding the perfect mic for yourself. :)

WTF's up with this chunk blowing, teddy bear loving, C1 fondling, non-quality controlling, individual?

This says a lot, when a comment like this is made and ignored...

EWWWWWWWWW.

Most folks debating whether to get a C1 have never heard the Neumann U87 in the flesh, or any other high end mic for that matter, let alone owned one or had extensive experience with one.

I didn't become aware of the Chinese "harshness" until I had used some better mics for awhile. It's funny, because it's so obvious now, whereas before I had a hard time telling any difference.
There's no doubt that most of those in the market for a C1 have never heard a Neumann in the flesh, but plenty who have USED the C1 have, and the C1 holds up well to the comparison. Is it as good as the Neumann? No. Does it matter? Not a bit. We're talking a couple hundred against a few thousand. The C1 comes close enough for most purposes.

As for Chinese mic harshness, there can indeed be a bit of that, but with the right pre and some knowledge of EQ can take care of much of that. Also, many of us have been conditioned -- by this very forum -- to expect that harshness. So what do we get? Surprise, surprise.

The C1 is a fine mic. Not every mainstream recording was done with a Neumann. And many of them were done with those very same harsh Chinese mics.

I wonder how much getting older affects a persons ears.

How the hell do you have time to do that AND manufacture mics from your barge at the same time? :D Hey, catch up with ya later. Maybe we could chat over some tea?

And when did you fit in learning such perfect English, too?

There's another mic I'm REALLY wanting to try. Not read a bad word about that thing.

I have never read anything bad about it either. The only thing I read that I was uneasy about was this :

The CAD M179 Condenser microphone requires a 24 or 48 Volt Phantom power supply which can deliver at least 8mA for proper operation. I read someone questioning whether all mixers can provide 8mA.

Personally I don't know.
only $169.00 here. That's a good price. They go for $199 on Ebay.

Yeah - good prices slightly tougher to come by over here - that should be around £100, but I don't think you can see under about £170 ($300) from new.

Wow thanks if yur calling me young, I haven't been called young for 15 plus years. I still don't see why you are so in love with a C1 especially since I own one and have used it.

Let's face it, some of us use our EARS to judge a mic, not the origin of its birth. If we're going to talk about who owns what, here's my current mic list:

Gefell UM92
Neumann U87, M149, TLM127
Soundelux U97
Sennheiser ME66 Shotgun
MXL V67G
Studio Projects C1, C3, B1
Shure SM57
AT4047
Rode NT3

Some sound better than others. None of the high-enders, however, can justify their price any longer (although we want to believe they can because, dammit, we spent a lot of MONEY on the damn things) -- despite the fact that some tend to have a smoother top end.

The budget mics aren't there yet, but they're catching up. And you and folks like you can howl about it all you want about it, but you're listening with your pocketbooks and not your ears.

Yes, the differences are there. Markedly in some cases. But for most applications -- especially in home studios -- there isn't enough difference to warrant the price. I've seen masters get great sound out of the doggiest of mics. That you can't get good sound out of your C1 just indicates to me that you don't know HOW.

And you want to know a dirty little secret? The C1 is being used in place of the Neumann in pro studios all over the country. And VERY FEW people -- including the record companies -- can tell the difference.
