The problem is that those of us who like these guys and their products get flamed by a couple of idiots who assume we're marketers. I'm not too fussed ... but Harvey and others have had years of that crap and sensibly decided to move on.
Well, I've been around some time also, and have been trying to stay out of this discussion. I just didn't want to pass the (non-existing) opportunity for some free gear ;-) Or rather, didn't want to to miss the opportunity to make a "witty" remark.
Incidently, I own some PMI gear and it works for me. Sure, I can hear some of the deficiencies also, but I don't complain -- it seems pretty good value for the money, as is some of the other stuff I have (Røde, Oktava, Shure, AKG, ECM-8000 and some CAD on its way -- thinking about the ADK Hamburg also).
There are many other factors important to the sound -- including the source and the room and the skills of the guy working the knobs and the guy that plays/sings/whatever... So, with most of the equipment I have, you learn how to work around the weak areas and try to use the most fitting tool for the occasion. I'm sure that better tools would make certain things easier -- but I have no major problem EQ'ing -1.5 dB at 5 kHz on my Røde to tame it down a bit, it that is what I need in a mix. I don't make a living on this, it's all for fun.
Anyway, sorry for disturbing this thread -- it is really refreshing to hear someone making good use of a mic, and achieving a nice result working it out!
