Is there any way to make this mic warmer without buying an expensive pre?

LOL. Seriously, there's no way to get a warm sound out of this mic?

I've never used a C1, so I have no idea what I'm talking about. Now with that disclosure, I would recommend that you employ a little proximity effect to "warm it up" a little. You might also find that, rather than an expensive pre, something like a Toob MP may actually take the edge off the hyped upper mids of this mic. A highly detailed expensive pre may just accentuate what you don't like about the mic.

Good luck,
RD

Is your source a "warm" source? That makes the biggest difference. Work on your source first.

I use it mainly for vocals. After i got tired of the sibilance, i started usin my nady scm 950 again and got better results. I just wish the nady captured a smudge bit more high end content. If i could combine the two, that would be the sound i want.

make sure you're using it in a room with wood walls, they tend to warm everything up

I use one and I agree, when I'm hearing it lose fullness I tell them to stay closer to the mic. It usually helps alot. I say use a windscreen and get right up on the mic, within 5 inches, and straight on axis.

I use a windscreen, i've tried the proximity effect, numerous mic positions, and i still can't get the blend i want. It's a sibilance issue. If i get close it's warmer but theres that irritating sound in like the 1k area that won't go away. And when i eq the takes, you can tell they were eq'd. Completely unnatural. I plan to get a new mic and use the c1 for sources with alot of high end content like flute or something. I recorded my elementary school recorder on it and it sounded great! Guitar sounds pretty good! Female vocals good but too much sibilance! Male rap vocals, thumbs down.

you could try close up but sing either over the top of the mic or underneth it

Sorry. I've tried that already too. I can't get that smooth silky sibilance free tone unless i use the nady. It just doesn't have the high fidelity of the spc1. Now the mic my friend has,adk a-51 typev, is what i want but until then i guess i gotta use the nady.

I'm runnin through behringer mixer preamps but i'm gonna get a m-audio dmp3 soon. I wish i could get an Avalon. That would be great.

DMP3 is a good choice to start, but an Avalon is not the be all and end all. I think you can do better for the $$$ with higher-end gear.

In regards to the C1, well it has a reputation for being "bright". I had a B1 (obviously different character) and it was not a good choice for vox (sibilence issues). I did find the B1 useful for other things, just not vox. I'm using AT and CAD mics now - no sibilence issues, and great sound. Are you looking for something that you might be able to use on a variety of sources? Althought I've never recorded male rap vox, my CAD M179 does a great job on vox for me as well as drum overhead use.

I thank everyone (except treymonfauntre and others who lower my reputation for no reason) for thier input on the mic situation. I looked at the cad mics, and i think i'd like to try those. I heard the AT was good too. Thanks for your help!!

I've heard a lot of great things about the CAD mics. I've never listened to one personally. Let us know how you like it, and how it stacks up against the C1

i got a Studio Projects VTB-1 preamp and its great... incredible for the price... anyway i read in many forums that when you use this pre with a C1 it helps smooth out the high freq's a lot... also, when you use the tube function it will make your recordings "warmer"... if i were you I'd buy a VTB-1 and see what results you get...

Thanks for the suggestion! I wish it were somewhere around here where i could rent a couple of pres and try them out. Not many music stores that rent around here.
