After all the talk about Studio Projects (both on these boards and pretty much everywhere else home recording is discussed), I was just wondering if anyone can give me a good difinitive answer to the following:

What exactly is the difference between their "C" series and "B" series? I know that the C1 and C3 have 6 micron diaphrams compared to the B1 and B3's 3 micron diaphrams. One would think that thinner diaphrams = more clarity = more expensive, yet the C series mics are about $100 more. I know that diaphram thickness is not (by a long shot) the only thing that makes a great mic, and I know that the C series mics have more electronics inside (they must; they're bigger right?) but what exactly is in there? Why the $100 addition to the pricetag? Thanks!

Well, there's really only a couple of people here who can really answer that, so we'll wait for Alan or Brent.

It has to do with what it costs the manufacturer to make each one.
No direct corellation neccesarily as to the quality of each one.

The costs of the capsules are really the same. The major difference is the actual design difference of the C Series vs. the B Series. They really are totally different circuits. I am sure Brent will be happy to go into the technical aspects of the designs if sees this.

It is true that it is more cost effective to manufacture the B Series, but that is not as a result of quality or more cost effective components. The B Series body is a one piece body, so that saves a good deal right there. There is also less components in the B Series design, and the cost of the shock mount and case is also a factor. Not to mention the engraving costs to the body on the C Series.

They are both the same kind of performance quality. They sound different as well. Not much rocket science here, just good design, and lots of QC.

Well if the differences are minimal and have almost exclusively to do with the circuitry and extras (case, shockmount, etc..), is the C series worth it? I mean, I realize that they sound very different from the B's and that is is always valuable to have many different-sounding mic's in your closet, but seriously....has anyone had any great expiriences with the C series that they really think the B series would have fallen short on? I guess I'm just wondering what Studio Projects' motivation to put out the C series was. I guess they wanted a "mid-level" mic series, but if so, why not make it noticeble better than the B series?

Also, just to let everyone know...I am in no means trying to bash Studio Projects - I think they're one of the best entry-level mic companies around and a damn good mic company in any catagory.
