Re: Re: Studio Projects B3 vs. C1

I would suggest that the opposite is true. The C1 is a fixed cardioid only microphone. It is also more colored than the B3 with a fairly strong proximity effect and upper-mid presence boost.

Has SP T3 similar strong proximity effect and upper-mid presence boos like C1 has?

I try work out is it effect of used capsule (I understand C1 and T3 has the same) or rest of electronics.

Thanks

The T3 has less upper-mid boost than the C1 and is, to repeat some overused adjective re. tube mics, smoother and warmer sounding. Some may say it is a darker sound... which when comparing it directly with a C1 is probably a fair description.
However don't equate that with lacking in detail or sounding muffled... it's just a different 'flavored' mic. The T3 would be more suited in recording sources that tend towards the 'strident' as its characteristics will tend not to accentuate the 'edge' factor to the same degree as a C1 or any mic that has an upper range frequency bias.

I don't clearly recall the proximity difference between the two but I know the C1 demonstrated a greater proximity effect up close than either my Neumann U77 and a SP's C3 and I didn't recall the T3 as being overly boomy up close.

While the C1 and T3 both use 6 micron capsules, the C1 is a single diaphragm fixed cardioid type, whereas the T3 is a dual multi-pattern version. (cardioid, omni, figure 8)

Also the C1 is a FET transformerless design while the T3 is a tube, transformer output design.

All of these design variations will effect how the mic sounds.

The C3's I bought are supposed to be a multi-pattern version of a C1. While some reviewers have suggested a C3 in cardioid mode sounds just like a C1, I can assure you it doesn't. For what it's worth I prefered the C3.

YMMV ;)

I don't even consider proximity effect with mics this hot. I keep a popper stopper about 4" off the capsule, and usually don't get in any closer. As for the Upper-mid boost, the T3 has a much flatter response. Dark is a good description, as Pundit said. It's not really fair to compare the C1 and T3, and not just because of the tube. The T3 is a much hotter mic (at least in my initial experience - 1 day!). I had to apply less gain on the VTB-1 than for the C1. On playback, the T3 track set perfectly in the mix, and when I brought up some high EQ, the air in the upper range was incredible!
I bought the T3 to record female vox, but it sounds so good on my voice, I just might steal it from my wife!:D
